Small Island BBC1 9pm

The one Hortense(sp) was waiting for, Michael, is he the one who slept with Queenie, and the one with the other teacher at near the beginning?

And is the man Queenie is talking to in the cafe now, is he the man Hortense(sp) came to live with right at the beginning.

Vexed woman, check that link in my post 'Wall Jobs' and Jim Crow, is an interesting snippet, well it's all quite interesting and not too heavy.

Yes definitely. Many young women (even married ones) were not well up on the birRAB & bees. Also I guess they didn't even stop to think when they were in a passionate embrace. ;)

I grew up in a very rural place and I reckon I must have been about 10 before I even saw a black adult. That would have been in the 1960s. That was a salesman who came to the door selling items and he came from the MidlanRAB.

There was a teenage boy in the next village who was clearly of mixed race. His Mum was an unmarried teacher and she had an affair with a black American serviceman. At the time if we asked our Mums about why he was a different colour we were all just shushed up and, as someone else said above, he was something "special" in the area. I can't ever remember anybody speaking ill of his mother or him actually.

Thanks for the snippet Prince, loved the Barbara Cartland story, I liked the treatment of Small Island especially the punch, I would have cast Kenny Lynch as Michael junior instead Hugh Quarshie.

I haven't read the book, but I feel they could have expanded this story.

I wanted to know what happened to the main characters, and how they fared.

bit late in the day for this I know - V + 'd both episodes and watched them back to back tonight. One of the best drama's of the year I thought. So well acted, poignant - mostly made me ashamed to be British - the scene with Gilbert on the park bench and the old lady offering him a cough sweet redeemed us though. very touching.

But the reason i am on here with this now is - the second ep. had about 10 mins of programme trailers before it started so I missed the last minute or two. It ended when the grown up baby Michael was looking at the photo album - did I miss anything more at the end?

I might search out Andrea Levy's other books now.

I must confess to not reading the book or watching a great deal of tv but this was the best drama I have seen this year. Acting in general very good and although I know nothing about her wouldn't surprise me if the actress playing Queenie is up for a gong. Background music for the most part also very good.

Erm from memory.
'Who's that?' (picture of Hortense)
'That's Hortense, the woman who brought me up'
'Who's that?' (strokes, picture of Queenie)
'That's my Mother'
Then Big Micheal's Daughter invites him to the park with the grandkiRAB.
Big Micheal pauses, closes photo album, and accepts invitation.
The End.

I'm no writer so can't convey the emotion, but you get the gist, lots of unanswered questions, see further up thread.

Thanks, I've added another question, I knew by the time I wrote that my other would be answered. Sorry for the questions I'm trying to watch and work at the same time.

Yes - David O is Hortense's husband and also the man in the cafe with Queenie... I think the scenes now are meant to have taken place 9 years before the beginning... although i could be wrong as it's quite confusing!!!
