Small Island BBC1 9pm

Does anyone know if tonights Sunday(13ths) episode is going to be repeated, I can't download the iplayer thing, so just curious, will be travelling tomorrow night so may miss the start, thanks to anyone who knows :)
 
Thanks for that Prince:) Of course, now I remember seeing him disappearing down the road without a backward glance. I had a thumping headache last night while I was watching it! That's my excuse anyway.;)
 
Exactly, It portrays Britain then as no better than Nazi Germany, where all working class white men are up tight sexually represt nasty vindictive racists. Typical BBC 'agenda' TV.
Also we didn't get to see all of Ruth Wilson's assets:mad:
 
I have to agree that it was a bit of a slow start and slightly confusing sorting out Michael from Gilbert but well worth sticking with. It's a shame the second part isn't going to be aired until next Sunday. I much prefer when they run the episodes on consecutive nights.
 
I agree with you - some lovely acting and it's a fascinating topic but oh dear... I am enjoying it more than I thought at the beginning. Haven't read it but would like to. David Oyawelo (sp??) is the most fantastic actor. He was superb in Ladies No 1 Det agency and again here... magic!
Who is the narrator in this?
 
Have to say, having just caught up with this on my Sky+, it was excellent.

As somebody else mentioned, the second part was a vast improvement on the first. I think possibly it was the subtle injection of a bit of humour. Maybe the writers were only comfortable enough to do this once the characters had been properly established.

The people on here bleating about the preachy beeb and how they are constantly ramming rascist issues down our necks really should take a look within themselves. Think maybe you've got more in common with some of the characters in this drama than you'd care to admit.

I also sorta got the impression that the family learnt the full truth about Michaels Senior and Junior given the mention of geneology in the final scene.

.... and I should just add. What a punch ! How did Hortense get up from that one. Eileen off Corrie would have been proud of it.
 
I found this very similar to the book - slow and stodgy. As per the book, I wasn't very interested in Hortense and Gilbert, but liked Michael and Queenie. It was slow going but there is a wonderful plot twist at the end which made it worthwhile. Unfortunately the preview has already given most of it away, I wish they would not do that!

I thought the book could do with editing down a lot, and the tv adaptation is the same, but at least it's nice to look at. Could have done without the narrator though.
 
what night of the week is this on? I'm gonna catch the first 2 episodes online seeing as I missed them. I read the book for AS English Literature. Looking forward to the adaptation.
 
I agree with what you mean about the negative viewpoints, I think what summed it up for me was Queenie describing her visit to the commonwealth exhibition. A lot of it is ignorance because of the lack of travel and education and I guess that people get defensive and aggressive trying to hide their lack of knowledge? A friend of mine's father came over and experienced horrendous racism and she sadly still gets it today :( so I think that the adaption and the novel remain very true to the facts of the time

Something I couldn,t undersRABtand , at the end of last Sunday,s episode, we saw Queenie holding her stomach, obviously pregnant, who was the father supposed to be? I thought a couple of years had passed since she had the fling with the Airman who was lodging with her( cant remember his name). When the other Airman brought the old man back after he,d wandered off, did she have an affair with him? Could someone explain?:confused:

Actually, it was the 40s and, yes, during wartime when people were fully aware that they could be dead any day they probably grasped every chance of happiness that came their way. It doesn't seem likely that Bernard had awakened in Queenie the full realisation of just how wonderful sex can be, but Michael sure as hell did! No wonder she wanted to repeat the experience when he turned up again after the war when her husband had gone missing and she didn't know whether she was still a married woman or not.
