Small first car with a small engine?

Hi there,
I'm new to driving and was wondering what a good, reliable first manual car would be (other than the Corsa, because of its 'boy driver' image!) - I've heard the Daewoo Matiz is great, but too many of my friends have one of these - are there any cars which are similar to the Daewoo? (800cc engine)

Thanks for any help! :D

800cc engine...really...you want to do that to yourself ....?

I'd go for at least a 1.2 (I understand insurance issues, but trust me you don't want to pull out in traffic in a low powered car because you'll be waiting all day for a massive gap in the traffic, or you won't have enough power to overtake a lorry/bus/small scooter/kid on a bike going up a slight hill)

Fiesta, Saxo, Clio (cheap euroboxes) are all cheap hatches that will be upto the task of a first car.
