I was at a mall yesterday, and I couldn't find my car, I was also with a friend.
We forgot where we parked, and after ten minutes of looking hit my alarm.
Then I found it.
As I was backing out, I looked all around me, and then pulled out, and then I left.
When I came home, about five minutes later, the police called, and said that my car had been involved in a hit and run accident. I was completely unaware that I hit anyone. Apparently when I was backing out, I slightly brushed up against a car to the left of my car's bumper. Apparently while I was leaving, an off duty police officer noticed and took my license plate number and left a note on the person's car.
When I heard this, I went out and checked my car and sure enough the damage was there.
I'm hoping the person will just not call, but I'm sure they will.
My car is a year older, and their both older cars, and there was barely a scratch on mine, so I'd assume there is a small amount of damage.
What exactly will happen regarding the "hit and run"? The officer said that I wouldn't be arrested or anything because it was on private property.
Is it considered a hit and run if I didn't know I hit anyone? The person with me didn't even notice anything, and the officer said I probably wouldn't have felt it. I don't mind paying the person for their damages, I just don't want any trouble with the law. Is this what I should say if they call me?
What should I do?
I believe that I hit the car, I've got a scratch and an off-duty officer saw me do it, I just can't believe that I didn't feel it or anything. I'm a careful driver.
I agree. I don't mind paying for it out of pocket, and I'd probably save both of us money if I did so. I've already called him once and left him a message to call me back. He hasn't called though. I'm completely willing to take responsibility, as I'm not a dishonest person and I'd like to pay him for the trouble.
If I'd known that I'd hit him, I wouldn't left my information, because I'd expect the same if someone did it to me.
An off-duty officer, saw me back out and when I backed out, I bumped up against a car to my left. The officer left his number on the person's car, and contacted the person, he has the make and model of the person's car.
He notified me of the other person's information when I left my information.
There isn't any more to it, the officer was being a good samaritan. If I noticed it happen, I'd have done the same exact thing.
