Slumdog Millionaire

I can't see how the film would've worked without it. Even when Jamal drew on his experiences from the slums to answer the questions there was always one constant; Latika.
 
Yes I agree to the extent that she was a constant, but she could have just been a treasured friend that happened to be a girl who shared the same experiences. I just felt as I said in my first post that the end of the film to me became more of a 'Will he get the girl' type film rather than 'Will he win..I hope he does after all he's been through'.

We all take different things from a film and view them in a different way and that's just the way I feel.
 
the whole point of the film wasn't lost on them at all - i think its been lost of you. his love for her is what drove everything, it was the whole point of the film.

even danny boyle said winning the contest and the money was immaterial and that he wished he'd had him NOT win the money at the end as it then made certain people think winning the money was what the film was about, when it wasn't..
 
I couldn't find 18, but how about these (I originally posted this in the other SM thread) :

- why did the WWTBAM host care that Jamal might win? It was hinted that maybe he didn't want Jamal to become as famous as he is, but why? Are we supposed to assume or know that the host is the most famous man in India or something and didn't want anything to threaten that?
- why did the police care, and care enough to torture Jamal? Did the host in some way 'persuade' them to arrest and do it? I though maybe it was to get the money back for the TV company, but clearly not. Are we supposed to believe that's the Indian police's default questioning technique?
- what exactly did Manna (?) do to entice Jamal and Selim to his camp? Was the Coke drugged, or were they persuaded by talk of a better life? A bottle of Coke alone seems scant reason.
- considering Boyle didn't shy away from showing the horrible life these kiRAB live, why telegraph the fact even in the film trailers that nothing happens to Jamal or Latika in the camp? The moment where Salim helps his brother and Latika would have been much more effective if we didn't already know that they escape somehow (not really a plot hole, but made no sense narritively to me).
- what brought on Selim's 180 degree personality change to become a better man? Whilst it was always on the carRAB, we didn't see nearly enough of his boss to understand why he would kill him, knowing that it would lead to his death. Similarly, after all the nasty things he'd done to Latika, his sudden conversion to wanting to help her was too quick.

How did this kid learn to speak English so well when he lived in the slums of India and never learned to read?

What happened to all of the questions between 16000 and 1000000? Since when is Millionaire a live show?

How did they all go from dark ugly kiRAB to light stuRAB at such a late age?

How did they all learn English?

How did the girl learn how to drive with an abusive husband?

Why did the brother want to die in a bathtub of money rather than escaping himself?

How did the main character even find the chick in the mansion (why was he even following his brother?)?

The second time he came banging on the mansion doors, what was his actual plan if someone had answered the door? I'm supposed to believe this is a smart kid?

Did I mention how did they learn English? How were they able to give tours of the Taj Mahal? How many shoes could they possibly have sold?

Since when do people tip with $100 bills, and this AFTER the people themselves have been robbed?

Why did Amitabh Bachan play himself, but Anil Kapoor didn't? Why was the host such an ass to begin with?

Why are all of the questions laid out in the same exact chronological order as his life?

What happened in the parts of the movie that they skipped out?

There is probably more, but I've only seen the movie once....
 
Maybe so in your opinion, but my view of the film was different to yours, the world would be boring if we all watched the same film and viewed it in the same way and didn't question it.

I'm wishing I'd just said the film was average to good like others, left it at that and didn't bother to explain my reasons, but I as a poster like to listen to others opinions and how they have come to certain conclusions!

If Danny Boyle said himself that people may come to the conclusion that the film was about the money/gameshow so he wished he had changed it (although I said there was a lot more to it than that), then I don't see how it would be wrong for some to come to the very conclusion that he himself feels the film portrayed.
 
Saw this the other night and it's certainly no chick-flick, but I can't say I'd consider it an all-conquering film of the year.

It has it's moments (the poo scene had me in stitches), but the ending, and in particular the closing lines, left me completely unvoved, I just didn't really care for some reason.
 
you're kidding? the cinematography and direction were superb. although there were other great films out this year, slumdog was a much more viscerally cinematic film, with some superb sequences, and really used the location to great effect, in particular the motiff of the railways, which gave the film a real energy throughout i thought.

It gets stuffed down your throat everytime you open a newspaper/magazine, turn on the TV, or log onto the net. I feel thus impelled to go out of my way to avoid it.

Token "ooh look at us redressing the ethnic balance" oscar winner.
