Slumdog Millionaire - What a wonderful film

It's not a standout question really. Although Jack Hobbs is one of the all time greats (arguably second best player ever), people don't tend to notice first-class statistics, it's more to do with test matches. I was quite chuffed that I knew it, actually (and my horror when the host fed him the wrong answer) :D
 
I think the fact that the right answer probably got an overwhelmingly large majority from the audience since it was such a commonly known quote so we were meant to assume he would have gone with the audience.
 
After hearing about this film, and like a previous poster, i too am not really a film person but this one appealed to me.

So, I've just checked my local cinema listings online and they are not showing it. Normally, Apollo are quite good at showing all the latest films.
It is showing in my nearest cineworld a few miles away but it looks like it's only on until Thursday and we can't make it until Friday!

More annoying is that we have free tickets to use for our local Apollo and I don't think there is anything else on that interest myself and girlfriend.
 
I saw this film yesterday - it's great!

I liked the idea of explaining how he knew each answer but it was a bit horrible at parts to watch! I was also suprised at the amount of poverty they show India has in the film. I'm suprised someone hasn't has complained about that?
 
Yep, totally agree.. A lot of people are singing Slumdog's praises as though it's some kind of groundbreaker. I don't think the plot is all that exceptional though- it's more the acting, cinematography and music that sets it apart to some degree. Although I enjoyed the movie, I definitely wouldn't say it's without flaws..

For example, I didn't really think the relationship between Jamal and Latika was all that convincing. The love story is one of the central themes in the movie, and yet it's treated v. superficially. It's not too different from one of those flimsy "love at first sight" type romcoms, in this respect. I mean, why are they so enamoured with each other? Their shared childhood experiences seem to be all they have in common..? Does the script give Latika a discernable personality at all..? I also thought Samil's epiphany at the end was a bit sudden. He seemed pretty committed to a life of crime, which included rape and murder, and yet he decided to repent and self-destruct when his brother's newfound fortune would have created a way out for them all?

Don't get me wrong, I did like the movie.. I just don't get the rave reviews to be honest. :confused:
 
Enjoyed it.

Reminded me a little bit of a Tarrantino style approach to India - all images and the occasional bit of violence and little discernible plot or story

Acting was so - so. Salim was good (in all his versions), Jamal and Latikka were mosttly forgetable.

Good film - deserves a few Ocar noms but probably no wins (except poss. for cinematography)
