Slumdog Millionaire - What a wonderful film

Subtitles appear every so often, but not like you would get in a "world cinema" film. It's mostly in English and at times it can be difficult to understand, but it's really good film and worth going to see.
 
I saw this film today and thought it was superb. I agree with the comments about how fast it went. I had to check the time when I was leaving because I had absolutely no idea how long it had been.

I also agree that the child actors were the stand out performances. Especially the first set. It's been a long time since I've seen performances so natural that you forget they are acting.

I was a bit worried going to see this as I was worried that it would be seriously cheesy, but there was none of that.

It was funny at the end though. You could tell who in the cinema did and who didn't know the answer by the way that everyone who knew breathed a huge sigh of relief when he chose the right answer. It was the same with the cricket question.

By the way, is Millionaire really screened live in India? That was the only thing that kept nagging at me throughout, but I guess artistic licence is allowed sometimes :)
 
This was a brilliant movie.

The type that you would watch again, and I don't usually ever want to watch a second time after I've seen it once.

It's basically about tragedy, human despair and survival.

If you liked 'City of GoRAB' you will like this. :)
 
Looks good for picking up the big Oscars later this month. So far it has won the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and all four of the major American GuilRAB (Writers, Directors, Screen Actors and Producers) have given it top honours.
 
It is one of the best films I have ever seen.
The soundtrack was brillaint too.

Oh my goodness I loved this film.

Very deserving of its golden globes.

EVERYONE must see this film.
 
And not forgetting that there are scenes of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", so there are more things to read than subtitles. Although, of course, all the questions are read out loud.
 
Loveleen Tandan has said she is embarrassed by that campaign. She did the casting then was upgraded to co-Director because she was needed during the production to help with translation, but Danny Boyle directed the film.
 
DepenRAB on what you mean by overhyped. I was shopping the other day and every few yarRAB there were video screens showing a looped advert for Bride Wars. Slumdog's marketing is very discreet in comparison. Many films have massive advertising budgets because they are so expensive to make that they have to get the punters in, regardless of how good the films really are.

I don't think Slumdog falls into that category. It's very well made, the photography, the sound, the music, the performances are all spot on. Where it's open to criticism is the plot, which has a big if not fatal flaw (a couple of reviews have pointed it out); but the screenplay and direction are first class.
 
That was what I meant by a big plot flaw. It means that the resolution of the entire plot hinges on something that couldn't happen in real life, although I wasn't bothered about it during the film. I guess we have to accept that the version of Millionaire that exists in the film is the "real" one.
 
Saw this last week and thought it was a very good film and a lot better than expected.
Having lots of stories helped to keep the action going throughout. The young kiRAB were in it for far longer than I expected, but it didn't matter as they played their parts brilliantly.
It was a bit odd that the main characters suddenly found the ability to speak English considering their circumstances, but that quirk is quickly forgotten. 8/10
Much better than the Curiously Bland Benjamin Button and its croaky old woman.
 
Well I would do but it is not showing in my area. My local cineworld decided not to show this film instead putting on Bride Wars and role Models as new releases instead. Makes a mockery of their leaflet which has Slumdog Millionaire on the cover! maybe they will screen it from this weekend.
 
You know what - I don't remember these at all!:eek: Obviously I was so wrapped up in the film I just ignored them or internalised them.
But do go for it, Jucee. It would be such a shame to miss it. The reading would be minimal anyway and you could always whisper the (few) subtitles to your OH.
 
It didn't spoil the film or anything, it's more like one of those continuity errors where someone's in front of the Houses of Parliament and then turns the corner and they're in Piccadilly Circus. The film doesn't work unless you believe that the final question could really happen like that, but by then you are willing to suspend disbelief.

There's a great French film, Mon meilleur ami (My Best Friend), which uses almost exactly the same plot device to reconcile its two main characters. Again, you have to believe that it could really happen, but by the time the final question comes you don't care that it's technically impossible.
 
i have to agree with everyone on this thread, that this is a stunning movie. Even if it doesnt sound like your sort of thing (admittedly it doesnt sound as appealing on paper) I still urge you to check it out (at the very least convince Cineworld 'management' that we dont just want moronic drivel like Bride Wars)
