Slice of Life

I'm pretty much saying shows that take place in the real word. No robots, no crazy sci-fi stuff, no epic adventure. Things that can happen in real life.

I see most anime does these “Slice of life” things. Lucky Star comes in mind.

But how about shows in the western? 6teen, King of the hill, Doug.
I know there's much more.

“The Weekenders” comes to mind. I haven’t seen it in far too long, but from what I remember, it was rather down-to-earth. Heck, it even had the characters with a full wardrobe, wearing different outfits on different days. You don’t see that too often in animation.

I can see that – to some extent. I think the kids in that series were a bit too good at sports for it to “happen in real life”. Not only were they spectacular at just about every sport there is, in one episode they even held their own against Tony Hawk. That was the point when my suspension of disbelief shattered. I think a true “slice of life” show should never cause major problems with one’s suspension of disbelief.

Pepper Ann and Azumanga Daioh (is that slice of life?) are the best ones I've seen. The Weekenders was pretty good and the original Doug was awesome (if that counts).

Though usually, if I want "real life", I'll read a news article or look out the window.

When I think "Slice of Life" one show always comes to my mind.. Hey Arnold.

Just kids having fun, living in a big city getting into adventures like every kid did.

With the exception of one very strange episode, Daria could be more or less described as a slice of life programme, with a focus on high school and its various cliques.

Another MTV animation, Downtown, is another example: the characters are based on real people the writers met (and they feel that way, too) and they live in New York city. There's a lot of detail which shows that the writers just lived and breathed NYC, you get a real feel for the place.

Aria could not happen in real life, but it's still what you'd call a slice-of-life show, because it focuses on mostly mundane situations, despite the futuristic setting.

The Peanuts TV show and specials could also be called slice-of-life, I think, despite the occasional World-War-I Flying Ace.

Maybe a long time ago but not nowadays. There's no "slice of life" about being able to switch jobs whenever you feel like it and hop on a plane to every country in the world. There's no realism to the show anymore.

King of the Hill, meanwhile, is a fantastic slice of life show. Probably one of the best there is.

Huh..I guess in retrospect, shows like Doug, Weekenders & Reccess would all be slice of life, an to an extent Rugrats i guess. All of those are pretty good shows.

& Yes KOTH is a great show, Best animated sitcom/Slice of life show ive seen!

I know there's alot of anime like that, but the Only one IVe seen was Lucky star, wich is an OK series in Small doses.

Hmm yes normal cartoons. Well aside from the fact they are the best cartoons for obvious reasons of increased normalcy, theres little i can say about them. Only that imo the cream of the crop would be Doug, Pepper ann, The Weekenders, Daria, King of the Hill, Recess, Stickin' Around, Arthur and Hey Arnold!

The Simpsons has not been a slice of lie show scince the third season, so thats nothing recent.
King of the Hill is the best slice of life show ever.

The first season is the only one i consider normal/SOL. But i see what you mean. It certainly began that way and went into a different type of show.

Family Guy meanwhile was never SOL

In order for a show to be considered a "normal" slice-of-life to me, is one that makes you wonder why it wasn't done in live-action to begin with.

Weekenders, Daria, King of the Hill, The Goode Family, As Told by Ginger, Pepper Ann, and 6teen definitely fit. They're really down to earth, so to speak.
