"Slacker Cats": A New ABC Family Animated Series (Also Talkback)

Huh, according to the website, this is being produced at Film Roman. Good to hear. At least it's not some tiny studio with no (or poor) credits under its belt.
Part of it may have to do with the fact that one of the executive producers is Seth Kearsley, who was previously a director at Family Guy.

:p I saw my first commercial of this. OMG that looks horrible. Family? It looks like Cat Scratch meets Family Guy. There's no danger of me getting anywhere near this. (hates ABCFam anyway) I realize ABC channels dropped all their Disney/Jetix shows (except for the crap that qualifies as E/I :p ) to force the ToonDisney, that my cable system won't carry anything Disney (though we have 5 old movie channels and 3 ESPN's :p ) Down everyones throat. (I hate Disney marketing)

And Duckman. I would like to see that on TV again, it's one of Klasky-Csupo's best.

And no, this show is not for kids, I went to the site on abcfamily.com and it looks like Family Guy if anything.

I'll check it out!

And that Film Roman also animates Family Guy.

I don't think it was as bad as people are saying. Just for the record, I never liked Family Guy.

This first ep had no parodies, pop-culture references, or "Remember the time when" jokes. Just comedy. That is why i liked it and I will tune in next week.

Hmm...so there it is. Guess I'm sold!

It's kinda cool that abc fam has switched-it-up with this kind of programming, too...I don't think they have any other prime time animated shows...

The earlier IMDb link was to the original Slacker Cats 'pilot'. A short film by the same writers, done at Will Vinton Studios in claymation, if memory serves. The opening gag in "Mexico" with Eddie purring due to a swallowed pager was from that short (and the main plot of it -- except it wasn't the pager of Eddie's owner, it was Louise's, and Buckley wanted it back so she wouldn't think he screwed up again and have him taken to get fixed).

At least "The National Network" changed its name to "Spike" when it started targeting a different audience. If ABC Fam wants teens and young adults now, then can't they toss the misleading "Family" label? You'd think soccer moms would start yelling by now.

According to Wiki ( ) :

The sale from CBN contained a stipulation from Robertson that the channel contain the word "Family" in the name forever, no matter who owns the network.

So they can't.

A few gags aside that i really laughed at, I"m not impressed yet. I will however give it another try, as Pilot episodes are normally pretty bad.
One or two gags I liked, the opening gag with the name of the Town:
"Where Everyone (scratch that), Homeland Security knows your name", that made me chuckle.
"I hope you die...I hope we all die, just to make sure you die."

Like I said, I'll give a second viewing. It has potential, they just didn't fill that potential with the first one.

2/5

Nah, not at all...I'm still having a great time with it...

Nice comparison...for a while I'd thought more Heathcliff...but I'm seeing a bit more Garfield in there now...

As far as adult cartoons go, there are much worse shows... Tom Goes to the Mayor, 12 Oz. Mouse, and...pretty much all Adult Swim animation except for ATHF and Robot Chicken.

Futurama is good too but AS didn't make that.

Eh, Tom Goes to the Mayor is only on once a week, and 12 Oz Mouse doesn't air anymore. While a lot of Adult Swim's shows aren't really that good (Assy McGee, Metalocalypse, etc.) they do air SOME good stuff. Plus, AS's anime is generally a lot better than this show, too. Say what you will about Bleach and Blood+, they don't insult your intelligence nearly as much as this show does. Overall, Adult Swim's shows are a lot better than this. They may not be making new Birdman, Home Movies, or Space Ghost any more, but I'd still prefer Frisky Dingo or Boondocks to Slacker Cats any day.

I mean, really, a cat porno calender? And nothing about the show was all that funny, in general. That's my main problem with it. It was just a "...cats... acting like humans... that's funny" type of humor. Plus, the show's ad campaign is basically "look at us... we're offensive!" And doesn't it air, like, right before that religious talk show, the 700 Club? I find that to be hilarious. The show in general is just unappealing.

I watched the first episode and it seems pretty average to me so far.

I do like how original Tabitha is. When I think of a crazy homeless lady, I typically think of a filthy bum wearing a tinfoil hat and ranting about conspiracy theories, the end of the world, etc. I'm glad they went in a different direction with her. Those rants sound a lot funnier coming from Emo Phillips' character.
