Slack in Drive Shaft of 1991 Ford Ranger XLT?

I have a 1991 Ford Ranger XLT (4.0L) which has some slack in the drive shaft. You can feel it pull back when you let off the guess. My Grampa asked his friend (a mechanic) how to get rid of the slack, but his friend said just to leave it alone and not worry about it. My Grampa (also a mechanic but not to the same extent as his friend) wants to get rid of the slack so it drives smoother.

Any suggestions? Should it be left alone? How can it be fixed?

Thanks in advance.

That's not slack it ware in the rear end and unless you want to spend a boat load of cash to fix it then leave it alone and let it run it's course.

what do mean slack like the rear end needs a new gear do to worn pinon wear and tear or do you mean that the u-joints need to be replaced or is it that when you put it in gear and you feel the thud at the floor board then you need to replace the trany mount or is it that not one of you guys have any clue what so ever and it makes noise? it almost sounds like you need to put a BIG FOOT sticker on the doors and windshield. hahahahahaha good luck
