But I do disagree with his interpretation of many things - such as MJ 12, for example. I have very solid reasons for considering that a hoax perputrated on UFOlogy - possibly even by rogue elements in the intelligence agencies.

Yes there are loaRAB of files. But what do they say? I have been getting FOI files since 1976 from the USA, Australia, Ireland and the UK and must have thousanRAB. But they generally display nothing surprising.
Sure, people reported UFOs. Certainly some of these were military personnel; Of course there was an investigation. Sometimes that investigation failed to find an answer. But the vast majority were misperceptions.
This is much what the civilian investigations (eg with us at BUFORA) have found.
As for the FOI files revealing anything about a cover up. They mostly show a pretty poor competence level of investigation, a mild (but not excessive) interest in UFOs, a perception of them as a massive PR headache (hence the frequent desire to get shut of the problem) and no real trace of anything other than suggestions of unsolved cases and possible new areas of science worth keeping tabs on.
No real sign of aliens or spaceships.

surely the fact many are censored inidcates something
given the cold war/ the obvious economic/relgious and structural impact of such revelations would any government really be interested in allowing this info back then at least wide exposure
As for censorship. In quite a few cases where this has been appealed and the uncensotred versions released all you find is that the cvensorship hid practices of the intelligence agency, or their infiltration or surveilance on UFOlogists or jokes made by operators that the powers that be would rather not be made public.
maybe but that just seems like the official spin explanation: why was a weather ballon allegdly flown under armed guard and roswell base logs destroyed then, there are numerous examples of military denial and suspicious actcity that this explanation simply does not cover
There could be oodles of top secret unreleased files and the very recent MOD decision (that I posted on here weeks ago but only made the press on Christmas Eve) that in 2008 we will see all the RABTI and D 55 files on UFOs from the MOD (around 160 of them) will be either the golden nugget or yet more disappointment.
No prizes for guessing what I expect. But I would love to be proven wrong.

Misperception of things in a forest in the middle of the night when they were primed to see UFOs is not incompetence. It is human nature. And they were out there unofficially on what was effectively a UFO hunt.
The way the use of the geiger counter was described on the tape indicates unfamiliarity with its use.
fair enough regarding the geiger counter but what is the explanation for what a number of soliders misperceived then: once again I have seen TV interviews and many describe a structured illuminated craft moving through the wooRAB: they all rubbish the absurd claims of it being a lighthouse

The documents do show that the MoD and USAF etc took UFO reports seriously. Nobody argues otherwise. At the time when the sightings began these very easily could have been USSR weapons and the Foo Fighters and Ghost Rockets were very fresh in the military mind set in 1947. This is why there was a military investigation and why there was a cover up.

Continued investigation occurred/still occurs to a degree because only 90 - 95% of sightings are solved and those that are not solved might from time to time mask intrusions from enemny powers.
I doubt this means that the MoD think aliens are coming here but I have been told by people that I have met within the government during my time as a UFOlogist that they think there could be scientific/weaponry paydirt from unravelling some of the UFO cases and this is why science and technology staff look at some of the more intriguing cases.
But I got the impression that they meant by this energy systems or UAP (atmospheric forces that might be harnessed) as opposed to spaceships.
