skin feels like its on fire and itching

I have an appointment this afternoon, but I thought I would just ask to see if anyone had anything like this before.

This morning I woke up and it felt like my skin was on fire. Then I started itching all over. It lasted about half and hour before it went away.

Any clue what it might be?

The only thing I did differently than normal was take a muscle relaxer before I went to bed last night. I've taken the same medicine and dose before and didn't have a problem.

Sounds like it may be an allergic reaction to something. Just because you've taken the same medicine before doesn't mean you won't develop an allergy to it. Also, did you eat something different, wash your clothes in a new detergent or use a fabric softener? Did you change body wash? I'm glad you're going to the doctor--good for you! Please let us know what he/she advises. Get better soon!

Even though I don't have a rash or blisters ore anything like that, the doctor really thinks that it was hives.

The timing for when I took the muscle relaxer (10 PM) and when the heat and itching started (7:20 AM) doesn't really add up to it being an allergic reaction to the medicine.

I haven't changed anything as far as detergents, soaps or anything around the house. And I didn't eat anything new.

I thought it might be my hormones changing, but since my hysterectomy in 2006, I've never had a hot flash like what I experienced this morning. So he doesn't think it is that.

He thinks it is hives brought on by stress. My husband was diagnosed with colon cancer about a month ago. He had surgery to remove part of his colon three weeks ago tomorrow. He sees the oncologist next week and will start chemo sometime in the near future. I'm dealing with issues related to degenerative discs in the c-spine that he thinks will require surgery. (That totally freaks me out!) I've also got carpal tunnel in both wrists. And if that isn't enough, I just had my big toe on the left foot fused in September. It seems like when we get through dealing with one issue, another one pops up and it never ends.

He asked if I felt stressed. And even with all the crap going on right now, I really didn't feel stressed. He said that I could be and just not realize it. And that is just how it is coming out. So he told me to get Benedryl and something called Axid. He says it is an antacid, but supposedly it was used as a antihistamine before it was used for antacid. If it happens again, I'm supposed to take one of each to see if it helps and go from there.

Thanks for your reply.
