Sinus problems and upcoming surgery....

I am due to have a hysterectomy on the 23rd and started having symptoms of sinus problems about a week ago. I contact my internist and told him of the problem and asked if there was anything I could take to stop it from getting worse such as Claritin. He said that I could try it or Sudafed with Pseudoephedrine. So far the Claritin hasn't seemed to work and looks as if I'll need to try the other. Does anyone have any suggestions. At this point I mainly have the stuffy nose. I certainly don't want to postpone surgery.

HELP!!!!!!!!!1

Do you think it's a sinus infection or just alergies? If it's a sinus infection you should probably get in to see your primary care doctor as soon as possible. In the event it's an infection I'd think there would be time to do a run of antiobiotics. Even though they shy away from them for minor infections, in this case I'd think a prescription would be called for. If it is just alergies, I don't think there's a lot more they can do than try the standard alergy meds and see if anything works.

As a side note, a good friend of mine had a hysterectomy while she had a very bad cold. I remember thinking that there was no way I'd have gone through with the surgery but she didn't give it a thought. I guess some people are more hearty than others.

Thanks for your reply. You're right, my problem (we think, I've never been tested) is more allergy and then it turns into a sinus problem. That's why we're trying Claritin first but think I'll get the Sudafed today. We're just trying to keep it from turning into a full blown sinus problem.

I would personally try Claritin AND Sudafed together (they are different meds so they can be combined). I hate that you have to buy pseudophedrine behind the counter though.. make you sign your life away. Also a great thing when I have lots of sinus issues is to do a Sinus rinse.. NeilMed sells a sinus rinse kit at most pharmacy/drug stores. It's different than just using a saline spray.

Cody48,

Try a sinus rinse; however, use pickling salt. Sounds strange, however, my father had a sinus problem for two years and an ENT doctor here in Boston recommended that he continue his sinus rinses however, told him to use the pickling salt. His symptoms began to clear almost instantaneously. You can obtain pickling salt where ever you get supplies for canning.

I hope this helps and good luck with your surgery.
