I'm on Singulair to help control my asthma and minimize the recurrence of nasal polyps.

My asthma is totally under control now (unless I get a virus or have a flare up of acid reflux) and the polyps have not recurred.

Hi

Have already posted on the allergies board about singulair and thought I would post here too and see if anyone else responded. Apologies to those of you who have already replied.

Just wondered if any of you had used singulair and have had any adverse side effects from using it. Also how long it was/is being used for and if it has been of any benefit.

Thanks.

Hi

gcsmithjr - Thanks for your reply:)

Are you saying that the singulair actually gets rid of nasal polyps or did you have them surgically removed. This would be very interesting for me as I probably do have polyps. My doctor cannot see past the swelling in my nasal linings but my father suffered from these and I have the same nose -lol! Also, I snore, so that is probably the main pointer.

Snowdrift - thanks for your input. I too am worse in the winter as cold air is my main trigger but this spring/early summer has been my worst ever so along with the allergies it's not good.

Choice - I don't know what Advair is exactly. I take a corticosteroid every morning and evening which is a preventer med. Then use my rescue inhaler as necessary. The preventer is Pulmicort and the rescue inhaler is Bricanyl. This is probably the same type of thing that you take. Hopefully by taking the singulair I might be able to reduce my meRAB like you. That would be nice.

I have been fussing about taking the singulair as anything new does frighten me a bit but I took my first one last night so I'll see how I go.

Thanks again:)

I've been on it for 9 years. It took about 3-4 weeks to notice a significant improvement when I first started taking it.

I've never had any side effects from it at all.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

That's a long time to be taking it. Can I ask you the reason why you were put on it in the first place (if you can remeraber that far back!), and how it has actually benefited you?

Thanks:)

Yeah, Advair is an inhaled corticosteroid preventer medication. It is actually a corabo med that includes the steroiRAB and also has salmeterol, a long-acting bronchodilator.

I had some pretty intense daily headaches when I first started on it, but after several weeks that went away.

Personally, I started taking it because Advair alone was not keeping my asthma well controlled. I may end up staying on singulair long-term, and have the Advair titrated up and down seasonally (I tend to have far fewer breathing problems in the summer). The acclimation period to Singulair was not pleasant at all because of the intense headaches, so my plan is to stay on it long term rather than have to go back in it every fall.

I've been taking Singulair for 6 or 7 years. Love, love, love it. I've never had any side effects from it. I also take Advair 250/50. Originally I took 10mg Singulair and 2 puRAB of Advair per day. These days, I usually only need half of that per day.

It won't shrink existing polyps but it will help keep them from recurring. If you have them, it may be possible to shrink them with course of oral prednisone and then use a maintenance dose of a nasal steroid spray and Singulair to keep them from recurring (though it's possible that you'll need surgery if they are very advanced).

gcsmithjr - don't tell me that, there is no way I would go in for surgery - that scares the life out of me - lol!

I have been taking singulair for the last two days and so far no side effects. I sound like I am just waiting for them to occur don't I!

snowdrift - how long did it take for the headaches you suffered to kick in - was it straight away?
