understand the current wars? The charge of the Light brigade

What has changed -- how and why ?
Advance capture secure -- move forward etc
The war on terror makes absolutely no sense to me --
Since these are the battles I understand -- How can I modernize my views to understand the current wars?
What is the objective ?
What is the motivation of the opposing side
I assume the officer class is still a bunch of buffoons
I assume that armies still win despite the leadership of the political masters
I assume that there is a clear objective
I assume the armed forces still behave with a sense of morality and esprit decorum
The Charge of the Light Brigade
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
2.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
