And god doesn't appear to exist doesn't that mean you can't discuss it ? Anything you say on the subject can't be backed up with a personal knowledge of the subject because nobody can show by pointing at god that he in fact does exist ? This strikes me as a futile area to study other than saying sorry you have reached a disconnected deity please shut up . Does this make sense ?
The study of a subject that you can't prove exists , can't see , touch , feel , hear talk smell or in anyways sense , measure with or without science is like studying the little man on the stair who wasn't there .
No Pac-man just believe or worship them .
Harijann name one of those proofs even one .

pl -gies [ME theologie, fr. AF, fr. L theologia, fr. Gk, fr. the- + -logia -logy] 14c
1 : the study of religious faith, practice, and experience esp : the study of God and of God’s relation to the world
2 a : a theological theory or system 〈Thomist theology〉 〈a theology of atonement〉
b : a distinctive body of theological opinion 〈Catholic theology〉
3 : a usu. 4-year course of specialized religious training in a Roman Catholic major seminary

well.... theology is actually the study of religion (perhaps its is poorly translated, but it does actually mean study of religion)

"theos" refers to God and related issues while "logy" refers to the study of these things

If you made any sense at all then maybe I could address the rest of this - but alas!

The study of Theology comes with the assumption that God exists and can be known in some way. In Christianity this is revealed to us through scripture.

That makes complete sense. Unfortunately we're stuck with the word now. Something like "religiology" would be better, but we're not going to change the English language overnight.
