You could find an example for each answer. A lot of the published poetry seems to come from writer's workshops and academics. That poetry is elitist and narrow in subject matter. But there is a lot out there from the New Yorican (sp?) to the poetry slams that is bringing a lot of rich life to poetry, unfortunately you don't see that on the shelves at Barnes and Noble. This is where the diversity is, outside academia. Most poetry books that I have seen, have a level of simplicity which is a strong and a weak point. Good that certain emotions and truths are distilled down to the fewest words possible, but bad that no one seems to be inspired to write the post modern equivalent of The Waste Land, The Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, Paterson, or The Cantos. Maybe some are afraid to be viewed as elitist and have settled in writing good but not great works.
