If it was anyone else, and I mean anyone else, making this film I would already be throwing stones. But it's fucking Todd Haynes, and I love all of his movies, and I think Velvet Goldmine is a fucking terrific rock movie that could have been fucking amazing if it hadn't gotten sucked into the Miramax recutting vortex. What he is and what he is not, and he is at the very least an artist of intimate and singular vision, and he is at the worst a stubbornly non-commercial artist of intimate and singular vision, will make this movie interesting and compelling I have no doubt. What the Dylan fans will say I don't know. How accurate it will be, with physical concessions glaring, I don't know. Already personal liberties have been taken. If there is not an accurate portrayal of the Bob Dylan from No Direction Home, the Bob Dylan of interviews and media events, I suspect that Haynes will spin an emotional truth. And I suspect his movie be less about where and why as how it felt then. With, yes, I'm sure, a tinge of queer. But if you wanted the Bob Dylan biopic to sound like Ray, sound like Walk the Line, sound like Hollywood, you've clearly already missed the fucking boat anyway.
Is where I stand on that. For when we get to there.
