Simpsons: Who Shot Mr. Burns? Whom did you suspect to be the shooter?

I myself didn't see Part 1 until the premiere Springfields Most Wanted and WSMB Part 2. So I didn't get the time to come up with a possible answer to who shot Burns.

So who did you think the shooter was prior to the second part and how did you arrive to the conclusion?

And from what I heard, someone actually did figure it to be Maggie, but was unavailable for commenting.

Thanks to my syndication-riddled history with "The Simpsons", I actually saw part two several years before seeing part one, so the mystery was pretty much nullified for me.

One of the lines I loved in one of the later seasons when Homer says that he thought Smithers did it comes from Lisa when she says "that would have made more sense.":D

I remember vividly that whole WSMB when it aired initially. Does the woman that won the contest and figured out it was Maggie still live in that "Simpsons House" in Vegas? The concept of winning a house built to look like the Simpsons' house is novel, but I'd be surprised if it's still up at all, let alone anyone lives there.

Does the house uses variable geometry and moving walls to match the continuously morphing and inconsistent design of the Simpson's house?

Seriously unless it's part of the joke how hard can it be to sketch a simple house design and have animators stick to it??

I actually have a weird story about this,

I went on vacation to Acapulco, while there I became friends with someone, while talking about the Simpsons he told me he played a computer game about "who killed Mr. Burns" and that in the end you find out it was Maggie. A year later Who killed Mr. Burns aired, in school everyone wondered and pointed fingers at Simpsons characters and I told them it was Maggie, no one believed me they said I was crazy, how could Maggie kill him. I thought that the episode was just based on the computer game...

I lived in Mexico so we were one year behind in episodes with the US, but as far as I know the second part would still not have aired in the US yet (or maybe even the first part), and if he had seen it in the US why would he make up a story about a computer game? Its all really weird.

I thought it was Maggie from the get-go, but could never logically create a circumstance where she would actually do it. Then I remembered it was the Simpsons, so logic doesn't matter...

I never did make a guess as to who shot Mr. Burns, even though I did see part 1 and part 2 when they originally aired.....I knew that it wouldn't be Homer, and even Smithers would be a bit too obvious...I figured it'd end up being something completely unexpected/unusual,but I never thought it'd end up being Maggie...
One of my brothers thought it'd end up being that Mr. Burns shot himself by accident...

Around the time the episode aired I wasn't a big fan of the show and I never actually saw the episode until four or five years later. But about a year after the episode aired I bought a book on movies and TV, I have since lost it so I don't remember what it was called, but it hinted that Homer had done it. So for a while I believed it was him.

My father assumed it was the baby, which I thought might be a bit far-fetched, but figured she'd make a strong candidate (going with the "least likely thing to happen actually happens" irony joke), or Smithers....

Actually, on the Season 7 DVD commentary, they mention that the "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" contest was a complete failure. First of all, they could only pick a winner out of the first 100 entries, and nobody among those entries got it right. So they had to arbitrarily pick someone from those 100 incorrect guesses, and it turned out to be some lady who barely even watched the show. She turned down both prizes (the real-life Simpson house and the opportunity to be animated into an episode of the show), and FOX just gave her a cash prize to keep quiet.

There was only one person (that the writers know of) who analyzed the clues in the episode and correctly deduced that Maggie was the shooter, and he posted his findings on alt.tv.simpsons just hours after "Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part One)" premiered. Unfortunately, he never officially entered the contest, and the show was unable to contact him via e-mail. His identity remains a mystery to this day.

What were the clues then that Maggie pulled the trigger? The only ones I've gathered:

- She sucked her pacifier intensely after everyone else mentioned being wronged by Burns.

- After Burns asked who had the guts to pull the trigger, everyone was eyeing each other nervously unsure, Maggie was the only one who still stared angrily at him.

The day the episode aired, I was talking about it with people at school. Everyone said Smithers. I said Maggie. But I was joking, I thought it was Smithers too. The next day, everyone wanted to know how I figured it out, so I had to tell them I was just joking.

I didn't know the episode existed and a friend of mine told me "there's an episode where Maggie shots somebody...".
Then I saw the 138 special but still I haven't seen both episodes.

This wasn't mentioned in the commentaries, but after watching "Radioactive Man" on the Season 7 DVD, I believe they slyly refrenced the who contest debacle during the audition for fallout boy.

Director: We're never going to find -- [spots Martin sitting outside] -- wait a minute. That child has the exact qualities we're looking for. He's perfect! What is his name?
Woman: I don't know. He just came along with one of the others. He didn't sign up officially.
Director: Oh, forget him, then. It wouldn't be fair to the other children who filled out their application forms in full.

Obviously like Martin, the one who was "right" wasn't chosen because he didn't fill out the form, and it wouldn't be fair to those who did fill out the applications. If that isn't a refrence to that the joke dosent' really make sense (which is how I felt any other time I saw the joke).

In truth I wasn't much of a big fan of The Simpsons back when the ep first aired, though the end of "Who Shot Mr. Burns Part One" was one of the first times I saw the Simpsons actually. I do remember they had a lot of ads for it in the movie theathres back then though but never really guessed. I only found out online Maggie shot Burns. Though I do credit the writers for making a fairly hard to figure out mystery even if some people did get it (but didn't submit they're answers you... Martin Princers you).
