simplifying complex rational expressions help?

if i can cancel out two x's (x/x) would it equal 1 or x?

here's where i am stuck the answer is x/3x-1

3x+1/x divide (3x-1)(3x+1)/x
i flipped it to multiply
3x+1/x divide x/(3x-1)(3x+1)
so i canceled the 3x+1's now the x's would that equal 1 or x?
i assumed it would be x cause it would only be 1 if it were a number, but i'm really not sure.
