Sim-Free and unlocked phones?

I'm on vodafone and I was wondering if I buy a sim-free phone (HTC Desire) from pixmania and put my vodafone sim into it, will it have all the features as if I had bought it from Vodafone. Similarly, if I buy an unlocked desire (e.g. on ebay) will I be getting just as much out of it as if I had bought it from vodafone?
