silk paint not staying on?

hi please help! i have wallpapered my stair walls in embossed paper and stated painting one wall in (tropical forest) and noticed after two coats that it rubs off easily. i have painted another two coats on and it and after a little test of rubbing (not too hard) with a dry cloth it starts to come off and you can see the white of the paper coming through. as its on the stairs and with me having four children it needs to be some what hard wearing! i love the colour and would love to keep it, is there any way to make it stay on, please please help, jamie leigh
