Silent Hill...

One other thing that I really disliked about this movie, is instead of revealing the plot gradually throughout the movie, they just thrust it all in our faces without explaining anything and then supply a 5 minute segment of grainy footage at the end in a kind of 'you sat through this and here's your reward' kind of way. It's like the writer thought, 'hey people won't understand what the hell is going on' and then just threw together an attempt at making things appear more coherant. Very poor. It's a good concept for a movie but executed poorly through bad writing.

oooooooooh ok. Thanks for clearing all that up.

So...

well I don't like the idea that they are stuck there forever! That's not a happy ending! Although I think Rose is better off without Sean Bean.

So Silent Hill now only has 3 people 'living' in it? I was going to ask more questions about this, but I don't think we're meant to ask about how that's going to work - reading too much into it. Although I will ask that if Alessa was able to put the 'good' part of herself in the real world, why can't she put Rose and Sharon back there?

Think they should have explained some of this a little better - especially what the other demon/monsters were about. Why, if Alessa needed Rose's help, did she allow the darkness to try and kill her so many times? wouldn't that have defeated the object of putting Sharon in the real world?

Do the other games follow the same story and do these characters tie in with that? ie - will Rose and Alessa/Sharon be involved again?

To answer that:

They are not stuck in the Silent Hill town, just in the reality that Alessa created. It follows her around if you will. Obviously no it's not a happy ending. But if you knew about the 2nd game in the series, it's about a man who receives a letter from his dead wife asking him to meet her in Silent Hill. Seems like Sean Bean is returning for a sequel and Rose senRAB him the letter ala Silent Hill 2. They left it open for a sequel obviously.

Yes Rose and Sharon are still in the reality Alessa created. However why can't they get out? I assume it's because Rose was stabbed and Sharon looked into the eyes of the Alessa/barbedwire/stretcher hybrid and that's not good (as seen by the red nurse bleeding from the eyes). Also it seemed at the end that Alessa/Sharon were rejoined. There's a theory that they both died while in that reality and that everyone in Silent Hill is essentially dead to the outside world (coal fires/fumes) and Alessa was just killing them spiritually. But you've really got to have your own interpretation. I agree it's not explained as well as it could be hence my lowish score.

Also, about the darkness killing Rose. Alessa also let Cybil into the Silent Hill reality to act as Rose's protector, as she has a gun. So I don't think Alessa was intentionally letting the darkness hurt her.

I wasn't going to see this due to it being based on a video game, films which I've steered well clear of ever since the nightmares enduced by Street Fighter aged 13, so against my better judgement having never played the game I went anyway. The script was silly and nonsensical, but the visuals and cinematography were uniformly gorgeous as you'd expect from something adapted from such a visual medium as the video game. The acting was however some of the worst I've seen in recent memory, Sean Bean in particular was godawful but that's no surprise really. 2.5 out of 5.

haha yes i agree

"now that you've reached this level im going to explain the plot to you"

it was absolute garbage, it made no sense at all (and ive played the games)

I have to agree it wasn't good - thought Rose seemed entirely untouched by much of what was around her (I wanted to see more hysteria and desperation), there was far too much obvious expisition (we as an audience weren't allowed to figure stuff out ourselves) and Sean Bean's role in the movie seemed completely and utterly pointless.

Not scary at all but plenty gross. I was more scared watching King Kong!

It is absolutely the most horrifically shit movie I have ever seen.

Yes - even worse than cabin fever. The only worRAB heard from a fairly packed cinema at the end, was "that was shit" "what the f was that all about" "i need a drink.

AWFUL

I picked up "The Silent Hill Experience" which is officially called an "interactive umd" not a "PSP thingy" :) Pretty cool. The comics are animated, which is neat and they have both of them on there. It's also got music from all four games, game trailers, the movie trailer, and interviews with Christopher Gans and Akira Yamaoka. It also has the "fukuoku" video and a couple of others that I can't remember the name of right now. Good stuff for fans of the series. It's kind of like having all the extras on the movie DVD way before the DVD comes out. I paid too much for it ($28.95) but it's only supposed to be $19.99

It's quite a long film i thought and to be honest, I'm not sure I 'got' it. I think that was the general opinion from what I heard when leaving.

It's not the worst film ever, but it's not overly spooky, or well acted.

If anyone can shed some light on the ending that'd be great (i obviously understood the main bits)

i really liked this movie. the visuals are beautiful, the story is interesting and engrossing. some of the acting may be a bit ropey and why they asked sean bean to do an american accent I will never know!
i have not played the game but my mate (who came along) said it was very faithful right down to using the same music (VERY CREEPY!) and some of the monsters/demons.

worth a watch although with 16 blocks, Sliver and MI3 coming out this friday you better hurry up ;)

I watched it last night and wasn't expecting much due to things I'd read on here. However, I thought it was pretty good. I agree that some of the acting was pretty crappy, but I thought that everything else made up for that.
I'm a big fan of the games as well, and I thought they did pretty well in making the film like them.
I am a massive horror fan and don't really scare easily, but Silent Hill made me feel very uneasy, worried, nervous, jumpy and extremely creeped out. I even had a nightmare :o :D
Keeping the music from the games worked wonders for me, providing that same eerieness. The fog was excellent and so were the sirens. I do not ever want to go to Silent Hill!
I also wondered if 'Triangle Head' would be in the film - well, I certainly wasn't disappointed there! He really scared me! :)
I'd give it 7/10.

I saw this Saturday and can only describe it as wierd - it was an ok film but the ending was crap. I know they did it so it is left open for a sequel if they want to do one but i would not see a sequel.

Just plain wierd is how i would describe it!!

I liked it. I've not played the games. I found it visually beautiful with some great music. It has more in common with the Hellraiser series than with Resident Evil. Sometimes it felt a bit linear but it mostly kept my interest. I did have trouble figuring out some of the plot elements. Reading online has helped some.

Rose and Sharron are involved in a car accident almost as soon as they arrive, and the policewoman has a motorbike accident too. That's what fuels the theory that all 3 are dead. (It doesn't explain why the police don't find the bodies, but what the heck.)

I didn't quite get who the nurse with bleeding eyes was.

overall i thought it was rubbish, although thats cos i had no idea of the game it was taken from, a lot of stuff wasnt explained wich didnt help
it seemed creepy at parts but it wasnt what i was expecting

Has anyone seen Silent Hill AND The Dark, Sean Bean being in both?

Major spoiler regarding both:

Weird how his daughter goes missing in both and never 'really' returns!!!!!

I am a fan of the first three Silent Hill games and I have completed them all, a few times each. I know and understand everything that is going on in the movie. It is a movie made mostly for the fans of the series I think. I mean it amazes me how faithful to the source material this movie is. Some other VG to Movies should have done this too.

Silent Hill is the best video game to movie transfer yet. It's as if the movie version of Silent Hill plays out as another installment in the series (but in movie form not video game form).

9/10.
