Silent Hill...

Has anyone else seen the trailer?

On first watch, the brief imagery looks like its going to fit with the feeling of the game series, but on second viewing i think its going to be a CGI heavy and typical Hollywood scare movie...

I hope I am wrong, and I hope it does scare the bejesus out of me like the games. I would love to see a good recreation of the satisfying thump when the woman takes a great big length of pipe and smacks one of those creepy nurses...

Anyone else have an opinion?

I read about it and it said that most of it was make-up for the scary characters and only some CGI was used. They said they wanted it to look more realistic than CGI (thinking back to the awful Mummy 2)

The trailer was good, it seems to capture the flavour of the game in a nutshell though whether the film turns out to be as good we'll have to wait and see.

I didn't even know this film had been made and caught the trailer at the Cinema (went to see Hostel) and within the first few seconRAB I was thinking this looks like Silent Hill.

Good god, how BAD was mummy2! Im glad you know a bit more about SH movie than me, coz like i say, i only saw the film twice... perhaps then they are REALLY trying to capture the feelig of the games then... i feel more optimistic now!

You do know the games were entirely CGI right?

Besides I've read that there is very little CGI used. The CGI work is mostly done to create the fog around Silent Hill. The monsters are created with make-up. So it looks like it going to be pretty good, and I usually hate video-game films.

No...?

Really??!?!!!

....Damn

I have the whole series - yah?

I havnt loved game / movie conversions either (though the boyf thought doom was ok)

My point was, the less CGI, the better - too many film rely on technology
"just because we can, doesnt mean we should"

But you know, experience shows me that they will.

All Im hoping for is a serious recreation of the feeling of fear represented in the film...

Whens it released again? 2 weeks?

WOW cool trailer. I hope they do a better job than they did with Resident Evil....though I should admit I think I'm slightly obsessed by Resi having read all the S.D. Perry books and then moving on to the books of the movies, which fill in a lot of the blanks the movies create. I honestly can't wait if the slightly twisted graphic novels are anything to go by.

When can we expect a UK release? I guess around September 06

Comes out on Friday I think - theres adverts for it on the buses all around where I live.

Silent Hill 2 is my fave game on the PS2...I'll see the film just for curiosity purposes if nothing else...it can't be much worse than Resident Evil I suppose

Its a 15 I believe.

The NOTW review was positive, although it was very short. I'm looking forward to reading a larger review when one appears.

The film does look really, I hope it does well. I know there releasing Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4 in a collection for the ps2 on the 21st too.

Seen it last night  its a pretty good movie! Not scary but incredibly creepy and tense (especially when the sirens go off!!). Wouldn't have given it a 15 cert. though...very gory in parts.

It's not good! Some of the people in the cinema with me fell asleep halfway through. Too many long drawn out scenes, and Sean Beans character is dull. There's a couple of highlights, mostly when the 'darkness' comes, and some of the creatures are disturbing. Most people who haven't played the game will not understand this because the script reveals fairly little about what the creatures are and the backstory of the religious fanatics. It's very faithful to the game, with a load of references thrown in here and there.

Overall, a boring attempt at horror. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't played the game.

I can explain the whole plot to you if you like:

Basically, Alessa was a girl who was concieved without knowledge of her father. As she grew up the religious fantatics of Silent Hill regarded her as an incarnate of sin (a witch) for whatever reason and decided to try and burn the sin out of her.

She survived but was horrifically scarred. This torment caused her to release a demon into Silent Hill which is a representation of Alessa's evil side (maybe she really was a witch). It wants revenge on those who wronged Alessa. However it cannot enter the sanctuary that the residents of Silent Hill have built within the church.

Basically the misty, ashy Silent Hill is the reality that Alessa created so that Silent Hill residents would be unable to leave, as eternal punishment. She can bring whomever she wants into this reality. But there is no way out, they are trapped forever (explains the ending).

She can also transform it into a hell version of the purgatory at will, which is when demons are unleashed. There are three realities in Silent Hill. Normal (Sean Bean enters this one) Purgatory (Rose comes here) and Hell (Demon Alessa's is here).

This is a place of nightmare where Alessa can create warped creatures, her version of people who wronged her (Colin, the janitor is the one who raped her, the grey children at the beginning are the school children who teased her, the monster in the straightjacket represent the fanatics who are bound by this religion of hatred).

Sharon was created by Alessa and is full of burned Alessa's good side. She was sent to an orphanage and eventually mothered by Rose. This is how Alessa brings Rose into Silent Hill, to reveal to her through Sharon, the truth about who Alessa is and what happened to her.

By doing this, it will create enough sympathy in Rose to allow demon Alessa to breach the sanctuary of the church through Rose's body (you see demon Alessa go into her, mother is god in the eyes of child and all that) and thus allow burned/evil Alessa to intertwine and have their sadistic revenge.

Since Rose and Sharon have entered Silent Hill's purgatory, they cannot leave, and thus are trapped in that reality. However with Sharon/Alessa with her, she can leave Silent Hill town and go to her home but still in that reality (due to Alessa) and is also why Sean Bean still can't see her.

I think that's basically it in a nutshell. It's a far cry from the more interesting game storyline:

Alessa in the game originates as a being of special powers. Her mother (Dahlia in the game is evil) attempts to use Alessa in a sadistic plot to birth a demon God called Valtiel from her body (including burning her so that she will do as she is told) so that the religious fanatics will be able to experience a 'paradise' they assume Valtiel will provide them. But Alessa splits her soul in half (with her powers) and gives birth to Cheryl instead (Sharon in the movie) and hides her away from Silent Hill. Now, Silent Hill neeRAB that other half of Alessa's soul to complete the ritual and birth the demon 'God' valtiel from her body. And thus they steal Cheryl from her father (man in the game) to do so.

I think at least with the game the religious fanatics had a motive. Not some silly witch hunt.

It was the most horrible disgusting boring load of shite I've ever seen!!

But then I am pyrophopic so thats probably why I found it so bad.

It was just sickening and the parts that weren't were really really boring and stupid.
