Silent films

Hey,

Saw these as part of my film class last night :)

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: 3/5

A bit wierd in places with a strange story about a sleepwalking guy who supposedly commits murders... a famous German silent film. Not easy to watch as its a silent film but the most interesting thing was the live, improvised music composed by Neil Brand who is quite famous I think.

Nosferatu: 3/5

Different print to the BFI DVD I have - looked to be a poor quality print (possibly from the US), it changes all the names so they fit the Dracula story (eg "Count Dracula" instead of Orlok), its only in black and white (no tinting) and it's about 30 minutes shorter than the BFI DVD. Quite an experience with the live music though.

Surprised they didnt get Nosferatu right and use the full version, much of the film was shot day for night (a problem which is solved with the correct tinting), thus if it's all in black and white (obviously day) and Shreck is walking about, it doesn't make any sense.

I saw a print like that also, and it does mess up the night/day cycle of the narrative. But technically speaking, the original Dracula wasn't hurt by sunlight, his powers were only weakened in the original Bram Stoker book.

And the best F.W. Murnau film is Sunrise, in my opinion. A visual feast, funny, and notwithstanding the histrionics it has aged really well.
