saw it for the first time tonight and was very very disapointed... actualy i wasnt becuase i know what to expect from shaymilan.

i like his direction but his stories are full of plot holes, poor dialogue and idiotic twists.

i think the cast were a good choice but the story was pretty poor... reminded me of how crap the new war of the worlRAB was.... SHUDDERS

it kind of built something up with great potential...and then...what happened?? i didnt get the end at all. Did the alien save the boy so Mel Gibson suddenly believed in God again or something????

but i dont understand how because she had died previously, and he was just having flashbaks to her death.

At least the 6th Sense was a fantastic twist in the tale, whereas this and Unbreakable were like ???????? Oh and The Village..........such potential....but not great IMHO

Sorry i wasn't clear. There is a flash back to his wifes death and she says something about his brother playing baseball and tells him to tell his brother to hit out.

Anyway i saw it about three or four years ago so i can't really remember, lol.

I saw it last night for the second time.
I thought it was great, an old fashioned type horror, OK so its not believable, but I liked all the conincidences at the end, and the way the suspense built, and I thought the acting was really good.

The alien was trying to poison him but because of his asthma his lungs were closed and so he wasn't affected. I think it was the things that were wrong in his life and hated God for turned out to save his family.

Oh I thought the alien was trying to save him by giving him some kind of alien inhaler treatment, how stupid am I, they always make aliens scary, he could have been a nice alien!

I saw the film last night on BBC1, not knowing much about it, and I was pleasantly surprised. The film was a bit slow moving, but it developed my curiosity and by halfway I was well abd truly hooked. Unfortunately the ending, when it came, was a little disappointing. Clearly, the director M. Night Shyamalan was attempting to replicate the "Sixth Sense" twist effect, and hinged it on religious appreciation, but i think you had to be heavily into that for it to work effectively.

I enjoyed it. I have heared people in the past saying it wasnt really that good, but dont agree.

I dont think Mel Gibson sounded like Mel Gibson (if you know what I mean) :D He has got a very distinctive voice and I dont think he sounded like MG in the film.

Or is that just me LOL :D

I really disliked this film..maybe because I`m not keen on Mel Gibson..however I read an artical some time ago about it and it is `supposed` to be about `re-finding lost faith`
One of the images is the `Cross` shape on the wall where the Rev Mel has taken down the cross because of his loss of faith yet at the end as he dresses in his `collar` the cross is replaced. He can not make sense of what his wife says during her dying moments yet he `makes sense` when he finRAB himself in the situation near the end of the film.
It really is an odd film IMHO.

I saw the film for the first time on TV the other night and stuck with it despite uncomplimentary reviews from the Radio Times and various newspapers. Most deplored the melodramatic ending and the twist at the end, Shyamalan's speciality. I wish they wouldn't mention endings and just let the viewer take them as they come.

Anyway, I did enjoy the film and thought it better than the reviews said, despite the obvious holes in the plot. The performances were excellent, particularly Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of the loyal, somewhat simple, brother. Thoughts about the film have kept recurring since I saw it on Wednesday night. Little touches got to me: the children wearing their foil helmets - just them at first, and later the sight of Merrill with them on the sofa, all three of them now in the helmets.

I agree that the questions of fate, coincidence, faith, etc are rather glibly dealt with, but there is something satisfying about the way the clues suddenly make sense at the most dangerous moment. Also rather heart-warming that Merrill's instinct to hit out with a baseball bat is vindicated in the end. (OK, maybe just another American feel-good movie!!)
