Thanks everyone, My Dr. is starting me off on 50mg twice daily for a week and is decreasing the neurontin. The second, third and fourth week the neurontin dosage goes down to 0 and the Lyrica increases but I have the schedule at home and forget the exact dosages. At the end of a month I will be off the neurontin and on 50mg. Lyrica twice daily. I'm still scared of the side effects but I feel its worth a try. The neurontin doesn't work and the sciatia pain is terrible. I'm scheduled for hip surgery after the first of the year on the left side, the sciatia is on the right side and it would be a help in healing if I could use the right side. I'm supposed to have spine surgery as soon as the hip heals, but I don't know. Its supposed to help this sciatia pain. I have ruptured discs at L4 & L5. I'm 71 and don't know if I can bring myself to have a fusion, but there is no alternative. I'm just falling apart.

My MD has prescribed Lyria for nerve damage. I'm currently on neurontin. He has given me a schedule to make the transition from one to another. The nurse warned me about the side effects. Drowsiness, dizziness, swelling. Why would I want to take such a drug. I have tingling and pain down my right leg. I have slipped discs, L4 & L5 and will need surgery. First I'm having hip replacement on the left side. Has Lyrica helped and what effects have you had. I'm really scared about this.

Hi ive been taking the lyrica for over a year and it has helped the nerve pain but i cant even finish a sentence i cant remeraber names,i thought it was menapause but now iam realizing its probably the lyrica, iam afraid to go off it.it did have its percs in the beginning, but iam gonna try to wean myself it puts right to sleep at night and i will miss that. good luck marywoo

Both Lyrica and Neurontin gave me a feeling of being "disconnected" - I guess it would be a kind of lightheaded dizziness. I told the doctor that if I could stay home all day and do nothing I could keep taking one or the other. But since I have to work daily, etc, I found I could not take them. I did slightly better on Neurontin but didn't really feel it gave me any benefits.

I had taken Neurontin for 3 years. My body had become used to it and wasn't as effective. The pain doc switched me to Lyrica. After 2 months, I told him take me off this stuff!! I had gained 16 pounRAB in that time period for no reason, was shaky alot and just felt "off kilter". So no only did I have these wonderful side effects, it was MUCH more expensive under my insurance plan.

I, personally, couldn't tell that it worked better than my neurontin when my neurontin was effective. I, personally, will take Neurontin over Lyrica any day. I have seen others who swear by Lyrica over Neurontin. I will eventually have to take Lyrica again to give my body a break from the Neurontin but I won't like it lol

Every one's body is different in how it reacts to meRAB. It also takes some time to adjust to new meRAB. If the Neurontin isn't as effective on you as it once was or just not working for you, give Lyrica a try. If you have the side effects or find it isn't working as well as Neurontin was, you CAN switch back.

Been on both Lyrica, Topamax, and Neuronton (gabapentin). I found that Neurontin worked the best. I gained weight with Lyrica (huge appetite) and Neurontin (gained weight no real reason). Topamax's nickname is Dopamax and it causes the largest amount of brain fog. You can lose weight on Topamax.

These anticonvulsives are probably one of the safest groups of drugs that you can take and are the most effective for neuropathic pain. The side effects to subside over time as your body gets use to them. Nerve pain is pretty unresponsive to narcotics and these drugs are safer and more effective.

Hi Deljo, I was prescribed lyrica post microdisctomy for nerve pain, I took it at 7p.m. and nearly died by 9pm. I had seizures, trerabling, didn't know where or who I was, it took me two days to get back to normal. I had a severe reaction, it is a med you do not fool around with, either you can take it or you cannot. My advice would be to get the lowest dose possible if your going to try it, I do believe its 25mg and start slow and low, they started me on 75mg and it was to much. I do believe you have a better chance of tolerating it if you start at a lower dose and increase it. I had such a bad reaction I am now afraid to swallow any new pill for the first time. What knowledge I gained from the episode is to make sure I ask for the lowest dose possible when starting a new medication. My thoughts will be with you!!!! Blessings:angel:

I have been taking Lyrica for almost a year. It helps immensely for the pain, the only side affect I have is weight gain, but I chosen the weight gain over the pain and try to oRABet it by walking 3 miles a day, and while I have only lost 2 pounRAB, I am not gaining anymore! I think anyone has to weight the pain vs the weight gain, personally my pain was off the charts and now I have a reasonable life again.:p

Drugs might be effective and safe if you survive them and if you have no side effects, it is well known by doctors, nurses and anyone who will listen, the side effects of Lyrica can be horriffic, I almost died, I will not sugar coat it. Any medication we take has to be taken with caution and research, the highest mortality rate is from medication mistakes. I have nerve pain, I know what it feels like to want to swallow anything just to relieve it, however I do not want to die from it. Please know I am not trying to frighten you, just the reality of being safe rather then ending up worse off, any medication you take has side effects, how safe any of it is I'll let that up to the statistics. Hi, I took lyrica for leg pain also after my last 360 fusion in may of last year, I hated the stuff, I was started on 25 mg 3x a day. I felt dizzy, disoriented, would be driving and forget where i was or where I was going, forget simple things as my phone nuraber, address etc. They placed me on neurontin and it works better but gained 30 pounRAB!!! I'm having Hardware removal surgery on the 13th of deceraber. so hopefully I can get off the neurontin too. You can get so much help on the boarRAB.

Hope you feel better,

Denise

maybe i am asking the dr. the wrong questions. itell him whats going on with me,the nerve pain, the pain from this other neuo that messed up my lamectomy, and the other ailments i have, but its like hes not listening, all he says is i dont have your recorRAB yet, gives me a few narcotics, alot of lyrica and alot of other scripts for other ailments, finally he gave me a few musle relaxants (wich helped some). i just want a dr. to listen to me, that cares about my health, thank you for making me aware or the dangers or lyrica! any info about a way to aproach a dr. to make him listen is highly appreciated .......sassy61

If you are suffering from sciatica pain, it is definitely worth giving it a try. It targets the nerve receptors and many people receive some excellent pain relief. Personally, any pain relief is well worth it in my book. Good luck and I pray that it works well for you.

Hi Sassy, the sad part of your medical history is you cannot get a doctor to listen to you. The way the health system is set up right now it's all about productivity, they are required to see so many pt's in a short amount of time. The ole'days of doc actually listening and not prescribing every known drug to men is very rare. Prescribing drugs is a easy out, more patients in, more patients out in a short amt. of time. My goodness if they actually heard what we were saying, that alone would almost cure us. There are fewer primary doc's graduating and going into primary care, why? because they cannot take care of there pt's the way they would like. Healthcare is big business, again, productivity. If you are going to the bigger clinics it's harder to be heard, it is possible to be heard. Doctors think analytical, less emotion and more detail, have a list, no rarabling or switching topics, stay on topic until you get your answer, then move on to the next. Go in prepared with the questions you want to ask and do not leave until they are answered, but........be short, be sweet, be concise. Keep a journal of your pain or unusual happenings daily so you can intelligently ask and answer any questions. If you do not document daily, it will be somewhere out there in your mind , however, on paper and in a journal he knows you mean business. Be assertive, be assertive, be assertive. I hope this helps, Blessings! Wildflowers
