side arms in the military?

is it only officers and noncoms that are issued them(this is with soldiers that would be in combat) or does everyone have a side arm. and if they are not issued to everyone can a soldier get one on there own to carry.

it also depends on the billet-as an armorer i carry a pistol, corpsmen can carry them, MPs carry them, and there are a couple other jobs i know of that rate a pistol for their duties

but also per current marine corps policy the only guys in my unit that officially rate to carry one are my CO, XO, and MO. everyone else is supposed to have an M4.

Actually, most NCO's and Officers have a sidearm. They aren't given them from the Army, it's more that they are kept in an arms room until needed. Specific MOS's in the Army have side-arms assigned to them in the Army. Primarily is the Military Police. Any deployment, field training, or working the job, they will draw their side-arms. Primarily the 9mm. Hope that helps..
