Sick niece

My Niece has been sick for over 2 years now, but her doctor can't find anything wrong. She's now so deathly ill I'm afraid we will lose her. Where can we find help?

By all means, I am not a doctor. However, your post is very vague. Given on the vague post with no symptoms I can only offer a few words. Sometimes a patient will have symptoms, but all tests show "normal". A secret is to look at the testing itself. For example, when I was diagnosed with Diabetes, my only symptom: no menestration (go figure). It took 6 months to catch, as everything came back "Normal." 6 months later, the doctor was just going through charts and looking at things during a well being check up. Anyhow, it was discovered the blood work was yes, normal, but high. So he decided to put me on a diabetic medication that would give my menestration back if I was diabetic, but not hurt my body if I was not diabetic. I had my cycle back that month. Answer was "she's diabetic." Some people just like to be unique...not match any symptoms but be something. So I can only suggest to look at the testing itself for any abnormalities (even if tests say "normal") and prayer and second opinions and specialists.

Keep going back to the doctor. If he/she is clueless, ask for a referral to someone else. The squeeky wheel gets the grease! Keep going back until you find the right doctor in the right specialty. My daughter developed fibromyalgia just out of the blue. It was triggered by some sort of flu/virus. It took us close to 1/2 a year to find a doctor ( rheumatologist) who knew exactly what she had.

Until then, you can try to treat each symptom the best you can. I discovered that the educated people in a natural foods store near you can be really helpful in guiding you to natural remedies. Most natural foods stores have someone working that specializes in the field. They are more than sales clerks.

I hope you and your niece get this figured out.

They have suspected crones disease but it doesn't explain all of her problems. She tends to get bladder infections alot and her veins are abnormally small. She gets dehydrated every now and then and has to go to the hospital for
IV's but they have trouble getting a vein and when they do the vein sometimes burst because they are weak. The doctor she sees just keeps loading her up on medication and claims its all in her head. But she has passed every psych evaluation he has sent her to. When they ask for a referral he refuses and if they try to find another doctor on their own, none that they have found will take her on. My niece hasn't been able to work a job for a year or better now because of her illness. She tries to exercise some but ends up sicker and unable to do much.

Have your niece make an appt with an Internist or Gastroenterologist at the largest NON-PROFIT teaching hospital she can afford to get to. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/directories.html

The troublesome symptoms you mentioned - bladder infections, frequent severe dehydration and weak veins - can and do happen with Crohn's Disease.

You said, "When they ask for a referral he refuses . . . " This is highly unethical for a doctor to do, I suggest she finds new physician immediately, referral or not.

Report that non-referring stubborn doctor to the health insurance company as well. If many complaints come in about him, they may drop him as one of their preferred providers. I would definiely get a new doctor.

I agree with getting a good gastroenterologist. If she can get some recommendations from friends or family members this may help in getting her an appointment. Your niece should also request all of her medical records from her present and hopefully former physcian and also her medical records from the hospital that has been treating her. Tell the providers that she will come to the office and hospital to personally pick up her records. Tell her to review them before she leaves to make sure that she has received a comple set. Hospital sometimes do not put in a doctors progress notes or they forget to give all of the lab or radiology reports. Most states have hospitals affliated with medical schools-find one and go online to their website and check out the gastroenterologist department. Quite a few of the hospitals also have doctor finder hot lines. This hotlines will refer you to doctors who are taking new patients. Once you have chosen who you would like to see, than pick up the phone and call them. Some hospitals have gastro clinics and your neice may have better luck getting an appointment sooner vs later. Wherever she goes, make sure that she tells the person scheduling the appointment that she has copies of all her medical records and she would be happy to mail them in advance of her appointment so that the doctor has time to review her case.

Good luck to her and keeps us informed on how she is feeling.:(
