Sibling Rivalry in Animation

(I did search, but if there's another topic like this I'm sorry)

I know that most siblings dislike eachother, but in Animation, who takes the rivalry too far, like trying to kill them? (You could also list just mild rivalries)

Azula and Zuko:

They were both 'enemies' as children, but when they became teenagers, Azula attempted to imprison Zuko, and later tried to kill him.

InuYasha and Sesshomaru:
In the beginning, Sesshy despised Inuyasha since he was chosen to wield the Tetsusaiga, and he got the 'useless' Tensaiga. Sesshomaru attempts to kill Inuyasha several times, but later changes his target to Naraku.

So.... Give your examples. :D:sweat:

Starfire and Blackfire in Teen Titans.

Blackfire was so evil she was willing to kill her sister or let her marry a slimeball, (literally).

In WITCH, Phobos feigned being a caring brother for his long lost sister Elyon, but ultimately had plans to kill her to inherit the throne and her power.

Not true in anime, if you see sibling rivalory on a anime (like Sailor Moon) like you see in the west, that is an exception not the norm. In anime, the sibling relationship is tressured, the oldest sibling is treated with the same respect one would give a parent, and there is a sense of responsibility for the oldest to protect his or her siblings, like that a parent would their children.

It's kinda hard to understand what you're saying, but usually the cliche is that siblings dislike eachother, and I never stated anything about anime having them, (which they do have plenty of sibling rivalries, in fact) Plus, pretty much all my friends that I know dislike their older/younger sibling.

Anyways...

??? Whaddya talkin. Anime has lots and lots of sibling rivalries, in fact most of the pairs mentioned here are from anime. I can think of a few others too:

Yuki Sohma & Ai Sohma from Fruits Basket. The "rivalry" is kind of one sided, but still.

Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist. Less pronounced, but there's definitley some competition between the two (moreso in the manga).

I also don't quite understand where you're coming from. While I have seen some anime series where the sibling relationship is treasured, the Kaiba brothers come to mind for that, but there are anime series where the siblings also have at least some rivalry with each other. A couple of the most well-known anime sibling rivalries have already been mentioned here as well.

One example I have of that is Syrus/Sho and Zane/Ryo from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. I think that it was more obvious in season two after Zane changed, but Syrus also always wanted to be as strong as his older brother and I would consider that a form of sibling rivalry. Not to mention he wanted to be able to beat Zane in a duel in order to make him change back. Too bad that didn't work though.

I also really liked the relationship Zuko and Azula had. Azula was often shown as trying to kill her brother and he had no problem with fighting her back. Those fights were intense and despite their fights, I thought that at the finale Zuko really did feel some sympathy for Azula since she was now nothing more than a caged animal.

I guess we are not watching the same majority of shows from the far east.

From the animated shows I watch, the majoriy of sibling bickering are from the west. Of course when one or both parents are dead, or if a parent is so evil to his children, of course the siblings would have a closing relationship.

(btw, you can also add just mild rivalries)

Umm I'm not sure if this would count but Lelouch and Schneizel from Code Geass... They were brothers. (And also the other viceroys too)

OMG, I forgot about Cinderella and the Ugly Step Sisters, lol. :)

While the majority of shows that you've seen have siblings fighting from the west, I don't think that means that only animated series from the west have fighting siblings and anime series don't have that at all. I think that it means the shows that you watch follow along those lines, but that obviously doesn't include every western and eastern animated series.

Yes I guess that is how it worked out for me.

Examples, Taichi and Hikari there parents were intact and they still got along great, while Yamato and Takeru got along fine because their parents devorced and seperate.

One thing about irony is Bleach, Ichigo and his sister all got along fine, but it was their father who they all bickered with, who acts like an obnxious older brother, which made me laugh, especially when one of Ichigo's sister reacted by saying something like "What kind of a father are you?"

Sorry to stray off topic.

I agree Zuko and Azula sibling rivalory was just awesome.

Whats this? 14 posts and yet no mention of Dexter and Dee Dee? Oh well, guess i just took care of that.

And Bart and Lisa deserve a mention too. In fact, id' say at this point in the series, Bart's constant name calling of his sister is one of the last prominent remaining aspects of his former "bad boy" persona (in case you haven't noticed, Bart has become increasingly white bread at about the same rate that Homer has developed the exact opposite way into more and more of a flaming jerkass).

Ed and Sarah. Sarah is probably one of the worst little brats I've ever seen, and she has her mother on her side so she can do whatever she wants to Ed. And Ed usually has to face whatever he gets.

About that: I realize that I haven't watched the show in some time, but sure, D.W.'s a brat, no denying that, but Arthur is, well, such a wimp, that I imagine that it must be hard for D.W. to not yank his chain. One of the few times I can recall Arthur showing any signs of backbone toward his sister was in a "very special" episode in which Art finally loses it and hits D.W. Of course, this being PBS, he learns a valuable lesson for his actions.

Anyway, I nominate the title duo from the now late series Yin Yang Yo!. This was a series built entirely around the them of sibling rivalry. Yin and Yang exhibited a typical sister/brother relationship going at it like fighting fish one moment, watching each others' backs the next. And furthermore, unlike many of these fraternal rivals, there was actually a balance; both characters were equally flawed and each one had their moments of triumph as well as their moments of defeat. It wasn't just one sibling running rampant over the other like Ed and Sarah or Arthur and D.W.

In Kim Possible, Kim is always teased by her twin genius bros, who also upstage her.

In Will and Dewitt, Will is always getting teased by his sister and brother.
