Hi everyone,
I normally post at the neck forum because I had a 2 level fusion in Jan. of 07. I finally am getting better from that and now I have horrible lower back pain. I fell hard on the ice in Dec. of 2000. I didnt start having problems until about 14 months ago. I am an elem. substitute teacher and standing became a big problem. I was limping my way out of the bldg. at the end of the day. Now I am to the point where I cannot even do half days because I cannot stand that long and walking kills me. I always assumed it was the SI joint, but my rehab dr. suspected facet joints too. Thank God, I havent had any leg pain, but I am 52 going on 82 right now. I feel very restricted in what I can do. It got so bad that yesterday I got steroid shots in the facet joints at L5-S1 and the right SI joint. A couple of questions here (please): Is it normal to hurt more when I stand and walk than sitting? This is such a deja vu experience since I went thru 5 yrs. of total neck misery (trying everything a person can try (tons of PT, injections, radiofrequency ablation, on and on. Now here I go again with the lower back now. I am doing PT with a pelvic specialist and trying to get the ole core strengthened and muscles loosened up. But it was too painful, so i got the injections.Consequently, from having lower back pain, now my upper back and neck are starting up again (spasms) because my posture is bad and I must be hunched over now. I dont know if disks are involved yet. I havent had the MRI yet. I am sure that will be the next step. I had DDD and facet arthritis and spurs in the neck, so it wouldnt surprise me at age 52 that I have that in the lower back too. I think that ice fall really wreck my spine. How do I not end up an invalid at the rate i am going???????? This makes a person weary. I was just in the hospital 3 times since Dec, for gallstones (without a gallbladder) that were stuck in the ducts and got jaundice and had to get a stent....on and on. I am finally better from that and now this. PLus I have chronic sinusitis for 16 yrs. that gets pretty bad. I am sure teaching elem age kiRAB didnt help that. The chronicity of it all is really depressing, although I am trying hard to be positive and my usually jolly self. I lost myself for awhile with the neck pain and I am hoping like heck that this doesnt turn into 5 yrs. or utter misery like the neck did. Any responses would be very very appreciated. THANKS!

Hello-I am sorry that you find yourself in this pain again. I really can't answer your question because I have so many different spine problems....I dn't know which ones make it hard to walk, sit, stand or walk. It's hard for me to do all of that. Walking will help one problem, but then make another problem worse. Then when I sit, that will take care of that problems and cause another and the cycle continues.

But I feel for you, as I too have facet joint arthritis (L4-5) and SI joint dysfunction. I know the pain and debilitating days that you must be going through. I wanted to let you know that I will keep you in my prayers.

SKZ...jeez...I do relate to your problem...the fall included...and the ACDF also..have done all of that... Also working on the SI joint problem right now..
There is an expert in SI joint problems in Colorado...these Drs. are far and few and my Dr. traveled to watch the Dr. in Colorado do surgery.. There are also other ways for dealing with the SI joint...prolotherapy..radiofrequency..are a couple. I do wish you luck. It hurts to sit too long..it hurts to stand too long and it hurts for whatever reason it wants to ... at least that is the way it seems to me at times. Guess I am just tired of the SI joint hurting. Hope you can find a good Dr. to diagnose and treat you..

I'm not sure...but...I think his name is E. Jeffrey Donner..my doctor went to Colorado to learn about SI joint surgery from him..and that is the name that is in some of the reports written by my doctor..you can look those up too...just look up sacroiliac surgery...there are 3 or 4 reports written by my Dr. Seems to give the most info. about the surgery etc. I wish you luck!!!
