I love them both and honestly find its gruelling to do this but I want some differing opinions.
Shrek (the original) definetly has the most appealing and straight forward story with Shrek being sent to rescue Princess Fiona hence falling in love with her and the rest is history whilst the second doesn't really have a good flowing story and really relies on the characters performances more than anything + it has Puss in Boots which really helps it alot.
I think Lord Farquay was also a much better villain than The Fairy Godmother (despite being voiced by the fabulous Jennifer Saunders)
Overall I think I'd go for Shrek though.
