Shrek 3 Criticism

I haven't been a Toon Zone for that long, but I was wondering why back in 2007, Shrek the Third was critized so much when it was first realesed? It seems to be like the 2nd one. I don't really see the problem that critics had. Can some one fill me in on specific elements of the movie that was a problem to critics?

Let's see:

The heroes and villains putting away their differences and becoming friends.

The plush-toy additions of Shrek's three kids. We all knew that the kids were placed in the movie just so Dreamworks can sell toys to the little kids.

And that's pretty much it plus the fact that the jokes were hit or miss.

Shrek 3 was horrible, such a disappointment! The first two were fantastic, what went wrong?

My problems with the third film were:

1.) Prince Charming (He was ok as a funny side-character in the 2nd movie, but couldn't carry the 3rd movie as a full-time bad guy.)

2.) The Princesses (Fiona's "friends" were all annoying, unlikable, and unfunny. Worthless additions to the cast.)

3.) Humor (Most of it fell flat in this movie, I only laughed a couple of times the entire movie- Shrek's baby dream and Snow White's singing attack scene- and that's it. The rest of the time I kept waiting for it to get funny.)

4.) Merlin (ugh...so annoying and so unfunny.)

I was really expecting this movie to be even better than the first two, and was bitterly disappointed with how it turned out. I will still see the 4th movie when it comes out, but I will be weary of disappointment.

Well i never understood why the first movie was so loved, the third was just the same crap the first two movies were. But het so what if I dispise the series, people like the first two movies and that is what matters I guess.

I really liked Shrek The Third. It's not as good as the first two, yes, but it's not nearly as bad as it's been made out to be. Plus, it featured the smallest amount of pop-culture gags of the series.

The only joke that I laughed at in this movie was the one right after Shrek first arrives at the school and those kids fall out of the Volkswagon Bus-type wagon with a puff of smoke behind them. The only reason I laughed at that was because it was an obvious send up of Spicoli and his buds in Fast Times At Ridgemont High.

I didn't see much of this one, however I did see Shreks babies as Dreamworks's Ewoks. When I was a janitor at the Mid Rivers theater I'd do all that I could to avoid cleaning up after Skrek 3 showings, they were usually pretty messy from the kids.

I cannot say it better myself. I thought "Shrek the Third" was decent, it might not be as enjoyable as the first two, but it has shining moments (the villains going on a rampage, the heroic mission of the princesses, etc), and personally, I consider the first the best, then the second, and then the third. I like the 3-D show, too.

I've said it before, but Shrek's problem was it became what it was supposed to be sending up. It's hard to accurately parody the Disney machine when you follow their business steps and trade in wit for pop culture and cynicism. They're disposable movies that try and act like they're razor sharp parodies of fairytale cliches, when really they're about getting you to buy a ton of equally disposable merchandise.

By #3, the concept was completely worn out. The funniest part was toward the beginning when Shrek was trying to take on royal duties. The actual quest was the same old thing, and the plot was lame. Everything is resolved with a mere speech at the end. Merlin and Arthur weren't interesting and weren't funny, whereas Puss In Boots shook things up a bit in Shrek 2. Shrek 2 continued the theme of the first movie's focus on Shrek's self-image and confidence. Shrek 3 dropped that completely in favor of something totally different, reducing the entire thing to a laundry list of fairy tale parodies.

It should've stopped at 2. A fourth one will really suck. Puss In Boots will suck. Dreamworks needs to learn how to move on.

Co-signed. When the Shrek franchise became the same sort of treacly, toyetic fairy tale fluff that it was originally intended to be a parody of, that was the beginning of the end. Every movie, TV special or anything else with the Shrek name attached to it now just screams "We're only in it for the MONEY!!"

I personally felt the cast was far too big in this entry, and most of the characters were useless. There was no need to include the fairy tale princesses in this, as well as Donkey's little family.

The new characters also lacked charm. I found it extremely hard to care for either Merlin or Arthur when they were the most cliched duo in the films, and listening to their dialogue was painful. It sounds like whoever wrote the dialogue needs to stay away from screenplays.

Most of all, it had basically become what it was parodying. The first film was all about breaking archetypes, and the second and third films simply started following them, only adding in some pop-culture jokes to make it seem more edgy I guess. It's really hard to enjoy the follow-ups when the humor from the first film is overshadowed by parodies of logos.
