Shows where a secondary character has become more popular than the Star???

well my choice would have to be THE WOODCOCKS
from the US sitcom Til Death. This was a vehicle for Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher but the neighbours were the best by miles....

so they were sacked and the show lost all it's viewers....sad really.

I found Chris more than a little annoying by the end, though I liked him in the earlier seasons.

Even though I only watched bits of Robin Hood, I think we all know why Guy was more liked than Robin. TPTB made him a more interesting character, and it didn't hurt that Richard Armitage looked good in leather.:D

I disagree.

I thought the Partridge section was by some way the weakest through the series.

The quality of the other actors and their characters (especially, I think, Bradley Whitford) rapidly took it away from being Rob Lowe's show.

Initially Bartlett was going to be a very, very minor role, only being seen, and the briefly, in the odd episode.

With the Kramer thing you could tell it most in quite a few Series 4 episodes whenever he walked in the scene he'd often get applauded for quite sometime, it carried on for most of that season until Larry David told the audience to stop, not that it wasn't appreciated, but that it took up some filming time.

Even though it was titled Seinfeld, it was always much about the main 4, it had such a strong cast, even though it was known that Seinfeld himself wasn't a good actor.

On the same theme what about Curb Your Enthusiasm even though Larry David is the lead role, in some episodes Jeff can steal the scene, as did Leon in the Series 6/7 episodes.

Scrubs: Dr Cox.

Family Guy: Quagmire.

2 Pints: Munch.

Prison Break: Nearly ALL of the supporting cast.

Shooting Stars: George Dawes then Angelos.

What about Butters? He was originally just a background character then he had his own episode and became the fourth friend for a while.

He's become a main character in recent years and a recent stand out episode saw him improbably become a pimp.:D

I love his double act with Cartman.

Just noticed post #127 :o

the most obvious that springs to mind for me is Dawsons Creek, I think it was once said it should have been rechristened Paceys Creek.

Pacey was supposed to be the best friend to the protagonist who was a bit of a joker, insted just about everyone (including Dawnsons love interest lol) fell in love with him and could care less about Dawson :D

Pacey Whitter = legend

Wasnt Chuck Lorre the original producer of Cybill Shepherds sit-com Cybill, who she very publicly sacked, so im guessing it was his way of getting his revenge.

As for Will and Grace, though i agree Karen and Jack stole the show, it would have been too much just to have them, they needed two less extreme characters to really make them funny.

Someone mentioned about Friends really trying to push Monica, but later changed to the Rachel show. Courtney Cox was seen as the star of the show when it was first pitched to NBC. However, they originally wanted her to play the Rachel character, but she only agreed to be part of the show if she could play Monica. So it was probably a case that Rachel was always ment to be the main character, they just tried to change the focus in the first series more on Monica, as they saw Courtney as the star. I wonder if Courtney Cox ever regretted her decision (especially in the mid seasons when Jennifer Aniston was such a cultural hit).
