Shows where a secondary character has become more popular than the Star???

Definitely. Whilst we're on British sitcoms, I think Nora Batty stole Last Of The Summer Wine, though that could be cos the central characters did change a lot! Trouble with an ageing cast- the swines keep dying!

I loved her in that role, but I wasn't impressed by anything else she's done. Even playing the same character visiting in Frazier didn't work.

As with The Big Bang Theory and Sheldon, I think it was always mainly about them; the weird ones. The other characters are there to give a normal perspective.

Really a lot of these posts seem to be answering a different question: "Shows with an ensemble cast but you have a favourite character".

Moonlighting Cybill Shepherd was the "name" but Bruce Willis soon became bigger and went on to become a major star whereas Cybill rarely appears anywhere impressive now.

The Good Life: The intros make it clear that Richard Briers was the big name, but all the others became better known because of the show and eclipsed him.
Ironically, the same thing then happened to Paul Eddington when he was eclipsed in Yes Minister by Nigel Hawthorne

Pineapple Dance Studios - presumably a showcase for the studio's staff and pupils, but Louie Spence became its star, admittedly helped by Harry Hill.

The Avengers. It was designed as a vehicle for Ian Hendry and Patrick Macnee's John Steed was very much a secondary character. But Steed was a hit and when Ian Hendry left after one series, the show was built round Steed and his succession of female accomplices.

In the movies, a famous example is The Pink Panther, of course, as the original movie starred David Niven with Peter Sellers' Inspector Clouseau very much a supporting player. But it was Clouseau who got the series...

One Tree Hill - Although Having 5 main stars, i always felt that lucas and payton were on screen more, now with them gone its moved onto Hayley and Nathan as the mains Imo

The OC - Ryan was always the main character in season 1, however in season 2 and 3 Marrisa becomes the main character...... and like have others have said, Summer and Julie became very popular!

I tend to always prefer secondary characters to the protagonist. I root for the underdogs. In my opinion, Smallville is the show that highlights this the most. As much as I like Clark I find him really irritating at times, I'm only half-way through S8 on my "Smallville journey" and I prefer a lot of the other characters: Chloe and Lois especially. I think it might be because the show has gone on for so long that other characters are bound to take centre stage at it'll make me warm to them. At the moment I'm really liking Davies/Doomsday. I can't stand Jimmy though, Lex became tiresome after S5, I liked Lionel but he annoyed me at times, Tess is great and enigmatic, never liked Pete - worst Smallville character ever, Kara was good but I think if she stayed in the show for much longer she'd have become boring, Martha and Jonathon were great characters. Oliver's great at times especially when he's with the Justice League. I just saw Lana leave (for good this time) - so frickin' sad I cried like a baby despite not liking her character over the last year or so; there were times when she was tiresome and they tended to be when her and Clark were together which is weird as I 'ship' "Clana"more than I do "Clois".

That was a bit of a rant. Basically, I like Clark but sometimes his unlikeable features overpower his liekable ones, making him drop down my list of favourite characters. I've never actually discussed Smallville on here before so I have no idea what other people think. What do other Smallville fans think?

Entourage

Ari Gold pretty much stole the show and ran away with it (aided of course by Lloyd)

The Thick Of It
Malcolm Tucker was supposed to be a supporting charachter now he is the show to such an extent they adapted the format and created an Oscar nominated film around him.

The Big Bang Theory- i always thought Leonard was supposed to be the main character but Season 3 was very Sheldon centric.

Gossip Girl- Serena was supposed to be the main character but now it is Blair (and Chuck).

HIMYM Barney seems much more popular than Ted.

Yes, but I think that was the idea from the start. The supporting members always had the best lines, most laughs. Actually Jerry was quite dull, almost playing the straight man ?
