Shows where a secondary character has become more popular than the Star???

According to rumour, Shelley was largely opposed to Kelsey Grammer becoming a fully-fledged cast member, and she had already wanted Ted Danson out of the show.
That seems a bit like life imitating art with her character of Diane ?

I did like the initial chemistry between Sam and Diane, but thought it had run it's course. Her character went from being tediously funny, to just being tedious. I don't accept Shelley was the better actress, she always appeared one dimensional to me. However, neither of them has actually set the world alight since ?

Sheldon gets on my wick BUT i love his interaction with Penny, so i'd agree he is far more popular than Leonard and i'm pleased because we get to see more of his Sheldonisms. :D

Can i add Ted from HIMYM really bores me. :)

I'll tell you why that is. People like me were kids when the simpsons first launched and could relate to Bart but we have all grown up now and can now more relate to Homer. I know that's the case with me anyway. I was a boy and loved Bart and now i'm an adult and a dad i love Homer.:D

Dynasty - I think Blake Carrington was supposed to be the central character but Alexis (Joan Collins) stole every scene she was in. Even though she was never in every episode I found myself looking forward to her appearances.

South Park - Butters who only really started to get noticed in series 5 is by far the star of the show now (IMO), anybody disagree watch the episode where Butters becomes a pimp.

Yes & from reading Cybil's biography she & Baranski didn't get on at all, which I have always thought is very sad as they were so good together.

When I used to watch Robin of Sherwood I always thought that the Sheriff of Nottingham (Nickolas Grace) and Sir Guy of Gisbourne (Robert Addie) were much better that either of the Robins

I would also imagine that Walter Bishop is the most popular character in Fringe, far more so than Peter Bishop and Olivia Dunham

Will & Grace - the supporting characters, Jack and Karen, regularly stole the show

Cybill - Cybill's mate, played by Christine Baranski, always outshone Cybill (much to her annoyance, apparently:D)

In The OC Summer Roberts was only meant to be in a few episodes but quickly became more popular than the "girl next door", Marissa Cooper. Also, while Ryan was the protagonist in that show, Seth became more popular.

I think it happens a lot in comedy where the protagonist often becomes bogged down in failed romances while they have a "sidekick" who is more upbeat and eccentric. The protagonists often end up as the "straight man". I'm thinking Ted & Barney on How I Met Your Mother, Frasier & Niles on Frasier, Leonard & Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory among a few others.

A similar thing happened in Valerie/The Hogan Family, although in that case, the lead character was killed off owing to Valerie Harper's major disagreement with the producers, and the series continued without her. (Apparently she won $millions in damages for breach of contract.)
