I know Channel 5 was involved in the bidding for the Big Brother rights before it started in 2000 but they lost to Channel 4

and The Royle Family was offered to ITV who turned it down

do you know of any other examples

Sky, of course, started the Doc Martin/Martin Clunes character in a series of films but turned down the chance to make a series.

The BBC never replied when Tony Warren approached them about the soap which became Coronation Street. He subsequently went to Granada and the rest is history.

Dad's Army almost didn't get commissioned by the BBC because they were worried it might seem disrespectful to the real Home Guard.

Oh, and by the way, a producer at Decca RecorRAB turned down....the Beatles. They went to EMI.

Red Dwarf was offered to Channel 4 when Doug Naylor and Rob Grant first wrote the idea. They offered to make it as apart of the Film on Four block but the writers were dead set on it becoming a series. Eventually BBC2 picked it up as a series....

Also - and probably the most famous example is that of Neighbours. Originally began on Australia's Channel Seven but was axed after 170 episodes. Picked up by Channel Ten the following year with some additions to the cast (inc. Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Anne Charleston) it became a worldwide success leaving Channel Seven absolutely pig sick... that would be until Alan Bateman came up with 'Home and Away'.......

The Fast Show was offered to ITV but they declined so it went to the BBC instead.

The Cube (that Philip Schofield gameshow) was originally going to air on Channel 4 but they were worried it might be too expensive so it went to ITV instead.
