Showing/Hiding own number

Hi,

I am wondering if Android allows you to suppress sending the own number when calling someone.
I suppose there'll be a general option (like generally sending/hiding number) but I'd be particularly interested if there's an option to send it only to certain numbers (like all stored contacts or maybe even specific contacts) and not to all.

Is there some option like this? Thanks a lot!

Ohhh, yeah, you can do this in most(?) european networks as well by prefixing *31# and #31# however saving contacts with these prefixes is rather a pain in the ..... because then you usually cannot easily send SMS and often it does not even recognise incoming calls from these numbers ..... so I am wondering whether Android has a similar setting to Windows Mobile's "show numbers only to contacts" or maybe even a better solution .....

true, There is an option in settings I believe to not send your caller ID at all. But since you just want to block if from a certain few.... I'm not aware of an app or setting for that.

Also I did a quick google search for something for you buy found nothing... sry

So, just the "usual" send-or-hide option ..... hmm, not good I wanted to place my Acer Liquid order, but this is a bit a showstopper for me

thanks a lot nonetheless of course!

Thanks

Actually I am wondering back since my Nokia days why no phone has a contact specific setting for this ..... it was a pleasant surprise to see WM has at least a "contact only option"

Because I want to have my number sent when I call my contacts but not to everyone else I might call ..... just a personal privacy issue

oh ok I see now... lol

I will continue to search for an answer for you. I'd hate to see someone not be able to experience the greatness that is ANDROID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks, thanks, thanks ......

Actually WM was my first "real" OS on a phone, after coming from phones which you use only for calling , and I liked it a lot for its openness - in terms of being able to install whatever you want - but recently it just hard resets itself by itself and such a game is nothing you can rely on on a long term - admittedly I installed a custom ROM from xda-developers, but well - and Android seems the only acceptable alternative

as to SpoofApp, thanks I think I stumbled over this service already once a bit ago but in my case it would be an overkill - I am not really after spoofing, selective showing/hiding would be enough .....

well you could use the "spoofing" to select what you want to show up , as I understand it. So it may work for you.

The actual app is free in Android market but you need to also buy credits

Anyways... hope i was some help, and you're welcome

You need to find out what number prefix your network uses to withhold your number, if it supports it at all. I know O2, many years ago, used to support dialing 141 before the number just like on UK land lines. Try some of the numbers mentioned earlier in this thread too. I did a quick Google but didn't see anything obvious.

After that, all you do is change the numbers on every contact you want to withhold your number from in your Contacts to include that prefix. That's great, but when they call you the phone won't show their name as they'll be calling you from 0123456789 and the number you have for them is 1410123456789 (or whatever). So, to get around this simply add a second number for these contacts with their normal number. That way you'll still see who it is when they call.

I'm curious as to why you want to withhold your number? If someone answers then they'll know immediately who you are when you speak to them.

Personally, I can't stand withheld numbers. I automatically send all withheld numbers on my phone to voicemail, and my land line uses TrueCall which tells any Unavailable, International, or Withheld numbers to unwithhold their number or not call again. My house phone doesn't even ring and all that happens silently in the background.

Thanks extorian, but as posted I already played this change-contacts games and am looking for a general system setting solution, like it exists on Windows Mobile where you can send your numbers to contacts only.

So from your posting I assume Android does not come with such a feature, right?!

In all GSM phones it uses a network level change (usually some kind of code that it dials like #XX#) to withhold your number. You can do this on Android, but it will affect ALL calls you make until you put the setting back. You can make a shortcut to this setting if that helps I think.

Depending on your version of Android, you'll find it in either:

Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Personal -> Phone -> Services -> CallerID.

Or...

Home -> Menu -> Call settings -> GSM call settings -> Caller ID -> Hide number (or Show number to put it back).

You can't do this on a per-contact basis. It's all, or nothing.

Yeah, I was simply wondering/looking if Android would have a similar option like Windows Mobile where you can specify to have your number sent only to saved contacts.
