Show Us Your Music Player

desktop-1.jpg

I'm really only posting it because it's striking how similar my desktop is to Wayfarers. And my wallpaper kicks arse.

This is my next step with foobar is to try and skin it. That looks pretty sick, I especially love the font you used on the left side with the artist/album/menu bar.

Nothing that's too much, but it works for me

I've tried RealPlayer, WMP 11, and Winamp Pro, but are there other players that are better than what I'm using now as far as functionality and resources?

Just Windows XP, professional edition.
Instead of having a multitude of garbage all over my upper desktop, I just got the program RocketDock that kinda emulates the Mac's thing, and you can put all your go to stuff there. Makes categorization a lot easier, and with dual monitors, I don't have to minimize my window in order to muck around with other stuff.

Since I screwed up my Itunes last week by trying to move stuff around that shouldnt have been. I have tried to make a vow never to go back to Itunes.

I downloaded Foobar at first and I really like its low memory usage and how fast it is about playing songs. I also tried mediamonkey but didnt like it at all.

But after downloading pretty much everything I could I settled with Winamp... I am still tinkering with foobar, I just need to understand it before I can really start using it. Winamp everything I like but the speed at which I click a song it take about 5 seconRAB for it to play because of all the music I have. It plays songs back to back with ease it only takes some time if I click a specific song.

foobar does everything. and the config you see above - that is just the one i came up with. everything can be rearranged however you like. i use the default interface, but there is a custom one you can install called Columns UI that gives a lot more flexibility.

look here to see what it can do:
Browsing Foobar2000 on deviantART

mediamonkey does offer limited customization, but with foobar it's much easier. and the foobar addon system is a lot simpler than mediamonkey's script system.

plus it does conversion, replay gain, mass tagging, ipod sync, and all the rest.

new and shiny! this updated version of my config really shows off the customization powers of foobar. i changed to the Columns UI interface which offers a lot more control over how things look. i'm pretty excited about where it's going :D

L = Lyrics. a blue music note is shown in this column if lyrics are present.
RG = Replay Gain. left is track, right is album. check marks if it has been calculated and written to tags.
PC = Play Count. just started this, so most tracks are set at zero.

bitrate column is color coded. blenRAB from red (128 and below) to green (320 and higher) depending on the value.

artist bios are automatically fetched from last.fm, and clicking on the bio panel switches to info about the currently playing album, also automatically fetched.

track ratings can be set with global hotkeys (ctrl+nuraber)

Okay, time for a little update :) I've been using Foobar for a little while now and have also been working on a dark theme. This was completed quite a while ago (last post), but I've since had to redo a few things, mainly components which caused crashes. The peakmeter spectrum had to go for example.

Here's my current layout :

The above shows my ElPlaylist which is the one I normally use. As you can see, groups can collapse if you want, making browsing through albums quicker.

With a click of a button, you can switch to the columns playlist which can be useful for organizing files and so on. Sometimes, it's just easier to have a list of tracks without album art.

And then, with a click of another button, the whole thing becomes :

Which shows basically info / cycling artist pictures / lyrics ..

It's not something I use often, but if we have a party, I put my foobar on our LCD TV and it looks pretty good .. Although there's still more I could do to perfect that last one!

Aside from the visuals, there's a lot going on under the hood. The most important I guess is album art, artist pictures and lyrics are downloaded and stored on my HD automatically. I've finally gotten to where I want with foobar - almost - in regarRAB to tagging as well. For genres, I use the discogs style-guide as a basis and have managed to modify/write some python scripts which fetch the right tags for me in a sensible way, minimizing the amount of requests sent to server and so on.

Foobar rocks!

Foobar sounRAB good since it's flexible, but what really matters to me is stuff that makes it easy to handle a lot of music.

In my Winamp screenie, you can see filters on the left hand menu for stuff liked Mixed artists compilations, decades, soundtracks and so on which helps you find what you're after in a big collection. Also as I've mentioned many times before, the search bar is smack in the middle which makes searching for stuff easy and I basically search for everything.

Can foobar do any of that?
