Shouldn't people be allowed to make comments on stories on Yahoo without being abused?

I am sick of seeing nasty comments posted about other people's comments on stories, and a few people have directed their nasty comments at me. The latest being a story about Formula One. I didn't understand why someone had posted a comment about the Holden Racing Team, and then someone else came along and said that I should stick to watching netball. He said that I am not qualified to make comments on motor racing because I couldn't possibly know anything about it. According to him, there are only three women who are qualified to make comments on motor sport and I'm not one of them. I only follow the drivers, I don't know the names of race engineers (Chris Dyer in Ferrari and formerly of the Holden Racing Team apparently) so does that mean I shouldn't make comments? This "person" has made me so upset and I suffer from depression which doesn't help things.
