Obama has been speaking about Lincoln a lot, all you will probably hear more about Lincoln on Tuesday. My question is shouldn't Obama be speaking out against Lincoln's policies?

Specifically, the Emancipation Proclamation was an Executive Order issued by Lincoln; would Barack Obama consider that an abuse of power?

What about the fact that Lincoln suspended habeas corpus during the war?

What about the fact that Lincoln initiated a draft in the civil war which allowed someone to avoid it by paying $300?

While I respect Obama's vision and references to Lincoln, I feel that Barack is focusing on the ends rather than the means.
Please note I was being sarcastic in my question and I think Lincoln is one of the greatest presidents.

Well, Brian, all people are multidimensional. Even Lincoln did some things that were wrong. But, obviously, it would be disrespectful and unnecessary to have a discussion about all of the things Lincoln did wrong. That's what history class is for. Columbus did some nasty things, MLK plagiarized some writings, Washington owned slaves, Mother Theresa doubted the existence of God. Yet, all of these people did some amazing things. We learn from history by not repeating the mistakes of our predecessors. We don't have to actually criticize their wrongs long after their deaths to learn from their mistakes. It is a common and acceptable practice to take what we like from a culture or person and incorporate it into our own lives....in fact, Americans do this ALL THE TIME. Despite some of the less appropriate decisions of Lincoln, overall, he is one of our finest Presidents.

First, I did not vote for Obama. But I don't see it necessarily to bash Obama over this policy or his idol, Abrham Linclon. It has some special meanings for many blacks too. Again, I don't understand see any why any reasons to have Obama to speaking out againsit Abraham Linclon's policy. IT is an old policy now, but it represent about mostly of the barriers which was not heard at that time which I believe Obama would not speaking out against.I don't believe the way things back in 1800's were at that time is something Obama thinks about. I believe the reason Barack Obama worships him is because it took a so big of Abraham Linclon, who decided to have the emanicipation treaty while he has had the power to change the way to give the blacks the chance to see the freedom to live in the lives like others, Not as the slavery anymore.( not in everything as the whites had at that time) you know, Abraham Linclon as a young lawyer who once represented the slave owner, Robert Matson to fight to bring the slaves on his farm property in ILL. since the dispute with Jane Bryant, a slavery woman who left for Liberia. Second, His wife, Mary Todd, who came from from one of the Kentucky's most promient slave-holding families. Third, Abrham Linclon talked into his former Whigs to support Zachary Taylor, a slave owner, for 1848 the bid of presidency. Fourth, Linclon, was also supporter of the ILLionios law forbid marriage between whites and blacks. Linclon gave his speech, If all earthly ower were given to me", "I don't know what to do" My first impulse would to free the slaves and send them to Liberia, to their home land, but realized the plan was impossible. He questioned himself whether freed blacks would made politically and socially our equals?" My own won't admit of this". As he became the president, He took so big of himself to change it than his own socially feeling as himself to to see all equals and to end the slavery itself. The reason of Abrham linclon was assinated because of that. Obama must felt to that with the unpopular policy that Abraham Linclon took as risk and gave its a way to open the beginning of struggle of barrier as equal to be addressed between whites and black to begin with than to be all about himself, If it had not happen in these days, it will probably would never happen as they think,( many blacks must have thought at least) Let Obama have the moment. Lets talk about how he will handle the economy and other important agendas during his presidency. Forgive me for my being a bad speller. I cannot get a spell check working.

Your question is good , but I dont agree with you as Lincoln being the greates president!Au contraire! His presidency caused more deaths than in all the wars combined!Obama being a modern man needs to focus on John .F. Kennedy! Now he was the grestest president!

Good points! I was wondering if he ever read Lincoln's bio. Lincoln did not always oppose slavery. In fact, he only signed the EP to end the war! Lincoln was taken by surprise by the commitment the Confederates had to winning the war. It lasted alot longer than Old Abe thought it would. He thought he could crush them in a week. When his generals swept through the south, burning, looting and killing, on Lincoln's orders, it was to end the war. He took drastic measures because he knew the North was losing the war. But, ending slavery indeed did do the trick. Alas, it did backfire on him though.
