Should we stop educating our sons and daughters on the dangers of the world out

of principle? A few hours ago I asked a question about preventing rape, which you can see if you go back far enough here. One of the answers said, among other things, something I thought was a little strange:

"Don’t tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape."

Although I don't always agree with this person, I generally respect her opinions. This one though, seems rather bizarre to me. I'd like to think I could walk around anywhere at 3 a.m. without worrying about getting shot, stabbed, robbed, kidnapped, run over, or have any other bad thing like that happen to me, but I'm not stupid enough to think it can't happen. Thankfully, my parents taught me better than that.

Nobody truly deserves to have something bad happen to them (well, let me backtrack, MOST people don't) but common sense will tell you certain things will increase your chances of these things happening to you. It would be nice if this wasn't the case, but the reality is much different.

Of course, I only notice this when we're talking about women getting raped. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "men should be able to walk around downtown (fill in the blank with the dangerous city of your choice) without getting shot."

I just wonder, are you going to simply not teach your kids to be careful on the principle that they SHOULD be able to do all these things without getting raped, or killed, or whatever, or are you going to teach them these things on the off-chance that something DOES happen? Or if you have kids, what are you teaching them about this? This can go for talking to adults too I guess.
