Should we let our "rescued kitty" play outdoors?

During the past sub-zero Alaskan winter we were visited by a kitten (maybe about a year old) that had taken shelter under our enclosed deck. It was apparent she had been on her own for some time. She was reluctant to approach us but accepted food and water we left out for her. As the temp dropped more my hubby made efforts to bring her indoors and succeeded. A trip to the vet for a check up and shots found her healthy (and even spayed) and we were a happy family of 3. All was heaven with her playing indoors and enjoying looking out the window at birds we feed but with warm weather now she cries like all heck to get out. We have an enclosed yard and take her out from time to time but she has an instinct to hunt the birds (have even caught a few but we let them go) and jump the fence. She immediately comes back when we call her but that means having to watch her like a child... which neither of us have time or inclination to do. We want her to be an indoor-house cat but don't know if what we want is against her nature for being outdoors. She seems so miserable being shut up with us now even though we spend loads of time "entertaining" her. What can we do to make being indoors more enjoyable for her?
