Should They Remake The Wizard Of Oz?

Ahhhh remakes always suck! They just complete overload them with CGI these days.

Not looking forward to it,some bits of the 1939 version was so awwww and the use of the black and white and colour to seperate reality from fantasy was so awwwww and considering the time/era it was made etc and what was going on.

Just another money making idea and as said they've obviously ran out of ideas.

They shouldn't remake the film. What they should do is make another film that's more accurate to the book.

There are 14 books in the original series, with the current trend of adapting long running series of books I'm amazed a studio hasn't already picked it up.

The original film is just dreadful, with some horrible performances, and why is it a musical? The film "Return to Oz" is much more in keeping with the tone of the books.

Sadly the original film is strangely loved, and any attempt at making a film more like the books would probably be looked down upon by most people, most probably asking "what happened to the songs?". And as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" proved, people won't see it as anything other than a remake, even though that was a different person's take on the book, rather than a remake of the film.

This is gonna be based on Todd McFarlane's version of things. I wouldn't expect it to be anything like the original film, or indeed much like the book. Should be very dark and quite nasty. It's not going to be a remake of the film, or especially accurate to the book. McFarlane says:

"Whereas McFarlane wants something slightly different: "How do we get people who went to

Return to Oz was an amazing film.

While Wizard of Oz was rubbish and I dont think a remake could make the film any less boring, pink floyd or not.

amazingly good creepy - the room full of heaRAB. the dorothy in that was what i imagine dorothy to be like though, and the right age as well! (meaning she would get none of the issues JG had after oz) oh and tic toc is an amazing character in the return to oz

i agree that a new film is better than a remake, a musical wouldnt work today i dont think. i like some of the songs from the original though...

That was The Wiz, a film adaptation of the all black stage musical (much like Hairspray was a film, then a stage musical and then a film again).

Stephanie Mills originally played Dorothy on stage and was supposed to be the same in the film but was bumped for Diana Ross because they needed a bigger name. Mills would have been much better - she had a far better voice and was the right age. Other than the fact that she was dating Michael Jackson at the time which would have been awkward, I yearn for a version with her in it.

I remember seeing these collectables (cool) last year and wondered whether somebody would consider a 'dark and twisted' remake...

I think it would be a great idea, and CGI can be overdone and bad (ILM - Star Wars Prequels) or done well and seamless (Weta - Lord of the Rings)

If done well, this might well create a whole new generation of 'frienRAB of Dorothy' (:D)

totally agree with you on that! at least it would be original! and after watching the god awful return to 0z made in the 80s they should leave the classics alone!

Sci Fi is in the process of re imagining the Wizard of Oz. Its to be called Tin Man. It seem good so far, but I'll reserve judgment.

As for actually remaking the movie...well. I dont think they should remake the Musical, but i think if they did a better adaption of the book then i am all for it, However I am more interested in seeing a big screen version of Wicked and Son of a Witch.

It all depenRAB what you mean by 'remake'?

If they are going to attempt a rehash of the original film then it's going to be a total mess, and people will laugh it to scorn.

But if they are thinking of making a new adaptation of the book (which differs greatly from the first film) then I'm all for it. I hope it's done properly and with flair.

I remember when Return to Oz came out, there were reports in the media that kiddies were getting very scared by the Gnome King.

Tic Toc was played by ex champion trampolinist, and soon to be Blue Peter presenter Michael Sundin, who sadly died about 10 years later of AiRAB. He caused a bit of a stir in the press when they found he had been in a gay porn movie (not naked though).

Return to Oz was, of course, panned by the critics, who compared it badly with the original. Time proves the critics wrong yet again.

I think they should make Wicked the musical into a movie. I've not seen it (i want to ) but I love the music. Anyway Wizard of Oz was a musical

after the success of lotr/narnia/harry potter it looks like every studio wants their own epic fantasy franchise and it looks like we now have another on the way. i expect the finished product will be more epic looking and action orientated and be closer to the lotr movies than the original movie.

i think the bigger picture is the involvement of Todd Mcfarlane, he seems to have his fans but i find his work very overrated. the Spawn comics were generic 'Crow' clones that used every 90's cliche imaginable and his figures have never really interested me.
