I think Archie has great potential for a cartoon, it could work like some kind of animated tweencom, but with some good comedy thrown in. Since they have a wide cast of well-known characters, winning an audience shouldn't be much of an issue.
Also, I think the big problem with the previous Archie shows was that they tried too hard to stand out. "The New Archies" was another kiddified cartoon in an ocean of many others in the period. The Archie crew hated this show, to the point the few New Archies stories made for the comics have never been reprinted. Even in the recent "Life With Archie: The Married Life" storyline, they reference almost every alternate/spin-off series in the run, but New Archies isn't there. As for Weird Mysteries, for the little I saw of that show it looked like yet another bad Scooby clone. No wonder it failed.
Archie is a series that works better when they stick to basics, it's truly part of his charm. I wouldn't mind them doing an ocassional non-canon episode such as Man from RIVERDALE or Pureheart the Powerful, but I don't think it needs any sort of "twist" to make it stand out.
Oh, and if they decide to adapt that story where Jughead becomes a gigolo, I'm officially all for this show.
