I have a personal ID card in my wallet and have had one for years. When someone, like the guy at the bank or someone neeRAB to know you really are who you claim to be, you shove it under his nose so he can check the photo and enter the necessary data, and that's it.
I really don't see why some people make such a big deal out of it...
Why is it a bad idea? We have to have passports to travel outside of the US. Do you have a problem with them?
Personally, I'm getting a Nexus card so that I don't have to wait in long lines at the Canadian border. For all practical purposes, it's a national ID card.
From what I understand is the ID would have a chip in it that would be passed through a device with a screen that you would present your finger print to to verify that it is your card and that you are an american citizen. It's primary use is to prevent employers from hiring illegals. It could also be used to prevent voter fraud, to identify illegal aliens/ terrorists, monitor sexual predators/criminals, and prevent identity theft. Though it does have it's advantages there is the fact that it has a the potential to be missused by federal and state governments which should be taken in to consideration. Though it wouldn't be much diffrent than a drivers licence except it would be almost impossable to fake and as common as a social security card.
Driving licences are only compulsory if you want to drive a car. That's the difference. It's also a short step from everyone having to have one to everyone having to carry one, and from there to police being able to demand to see them. The general principal should be that you have the right to go about your lawful business without someone, government official or private business, keeping tabs on you.
It's constitutional to ban gay marriage in Michigan but it's unconstitutional to ban it in other states, according to their state courts.
A state can give more rights to its citizens than the Federal Constitution does. NATO is 100% correct in his assertion.
