Should the US dump its entire budget into the military, go conquer the mideast...

...oil fields, and come out ahead? This would solve our economic, energy, national security, and war on terror problems in one fell swoop.

Gee, sounds great. Except that the rest of the world would line up against us, and lots of young Americans would get killed.

Very simplistic thinking.

President Bush had very similar thinking, originally. He thought we could just plow through Iraq, then on to Syria, and finally Iran, and then the entire Middle East would be just one big US colony.

The problem was that we didn't even have enough troops to stabilize and pacify Iraq. We hired thousands of mercenaries, set them free from rules of engagement, the UCMJ, etc., and they couldn't do it either. It wasn't a matter of money.

US miltary adventurism and economic hegemony don't prevent terrorism, they CAUSE it. There was no terrorism in Iraq before we took the place over, in the process taking over Al Quaeda's recruitment efforts as well.

We are past the time when we could just dictate terms to the rest of the world. We are a superpower in decline, and have been since Reagan at least. The Soviet Union collapsed of its own weight, and we can learn from its misfortune or we can follow it down the drainpipe of history.

thats imperialism and kinda unfair because it isnt our oil fields besides ireland has more oil than the middle east idk why we dont ask them ^.^

I dig the concept, but we are always concerned (too much) about the world opinion. We can't just do that. What do propose we do with all the misplaced citizens of these countries? Let them live as refugees? Where? Kill them? Can't do that..
We fight wars and rebuild the countries we fight in for a better way of life and a better future for their children. The positive results of this kind of operation will not be seen on a Global level for hundreds of years. But it has to start some time.
