Should schools be able to take your cell phone?

I am in high school so i know what its like to have teachers on you but when it come to cell phones it makes no scene. I have a cell phone to keep in contact with my parents in case of emergency but when the school found out that i have my phone on me they try to take it from me. i try to tell them i need it but they tell me my parents can contact me though the school. all i wont to know is why can they do this
