Should prisons have restaurants?

Ok this question may seem very bizarre - and the knee jerk response is to say why should my tax dollars go towards feeding criminals. Valid argument. However, should prisoners not be afforded the right to buy a decent meal in prison, especially white collar folks who could afford a meal.

If you say no to this proposal, are you argung the bad food is part of the punishment?

What? First of all, where are the prisoners getting this money? What are they going to trade in a pack of smokes for a meal? Secondly, yes, bad food is part of the punishment. You do something wrong, the state makes you pay for it. Since the state doesn't have enough money as it is they aren't going to spend more money on food. Third, even if prisoners should have the right to eat good food, the state would have to okay a private corporation to go in to the prison and use up space in their prison. This presents even more problems. 1) The prison system is already overflowing, what are you going to do, eliminate jail cells to provide for a luxury? 2) The state would have to hire more people to watch over and protect the people working in such a restaurant, and where do you think they will get this money from? 3) What are you going to do about silverware that can be used as a weapon?

The most important issue is, what private corporation would be dumb enough to put themselves in a prison. Not only would it create bad publicity about how they cater to criminals, but where would they draw their revenue from? No offense, but this was an incredibly dumb post.

Yes bad food is apart of the punishment if that is what is being served.

Restaurants in prison? Prisoners have no ability to work so, who do you think is going to pay for it?

No, Its' prison not vacation. The food they get fulfills their basic needs just fine. When you commit crimes you give up luxuries like restaurant meals!
