I am a young hardworking professional that has been working for a major corporation in Downtown Atlanta for a few years now. Throughout those years, I really have not heard anyone discuss politics in the office, however ever since the 2008 presidential election and its outcome, there have been a lot of political talk in my office. To be frank, the talk has come from older male WASP's in the office, whom did not have a thing to say about our last administration, but has a lot to say now. I know people are entitled to their opinions, but I am having a tough time working around certain coworkers after hearing what they discuss at the "water cooler." I feel that some of there diatribe is unjust and distracting, more of the latter. What should I do about this? Of course I will not confront them myself. Should I inform human resources? I really don't think it is an Ethics violation, however a couple of years back, there was an email sent out from our Ethics Department about "discussing religion" in the workplace, should I advocate the same about discussing politics in the workplace.
Furthermore, the comments are one-sided and have no depth. I would perhaps be able to let it pass if the comments were more dimensional, but they are not. Also, I never hear anyone supporting my views, but then again, no one knows my views because I don't discuss them at work. I would love to discuss my views, but I assume that the older WASP's would have something to say about them. So that is why I don't think that the office break room should be a place for political debate. I know some of my coworkers political views because of their "bumper stickers" and I know that there are many who don't find the need to come into the office and let everywhere else know. So once again, I don't think it should be discussed.
